Mrs. Richard Emery ot La Grande went to Portland this morning from where she will go to Seattle to' visit friends and relatives for several weeks. Mrs. Emery has Just recov ered from a spell of llluess. Geo, H. Curey, the real estate man of La Grande, was In the city Tues day, looking after some business mat ters. ,. Local insurance offices are busy complying with the recent Insurance, reduction rates, as ascertained ; by the Underwriters' equitable rating bureau. This new system is in com pliance with the laws of the state of Oregon and effects only the city of La Grande because of her fire-fighting facilities and does not effect the rates applying to property outside ot the corporate limits of the city. The reduction will effect all monies paid on policies from the 16th of Nov ember of 1912. Many of the sums are for 50 cents and up to a dollar, but the refunding clause will cause to be re- Dald as high as 211.00 in some lnstanc es. It is entailing a great amount of work.. Notices, with the change indi cated will have to be mailed to each nollcv holder. A check will have to K. noiisii for the refund and when Mv thU la done the entries will hav to be m,t in the ledger. The La Grande Investment company alone has about 500 nolicies that will be affected by .iiir.tinn The average refund - will amount to $2.00. ' Whole Train of Insane. Salem, Jan. 25. A special train carrying 320 insane people from the state asylum at Salem to the 'new branch hospital at Pendleton left to day for that place. Twenty attend ants are in charge. This is slid to be the first whole train of Insane peo pie transported at one time in the history of the country. It consisted of one baggage car, three tourist cars and tour chair cars. This maras the opening of the Eastern Oregon bos-i pital for the Insane.
