Thirteen, the unlucky number, was the signal of La Grande's fire depart ment alarm code that was used yes terday evening in calling on the de partment to quell a fire that threaten ed to gut the entire block of frame buildings adjoining the apartments of Emma Williams on Jefferson. . The blaze threatened to fire the City liv ery barn and all of the building in the block on- Jefferson avenue. The car made a fine run In spite of the deep I enow and In less than three minuted after the machine left the fire station J the fire laddies were playing a gush ing stream of water on the devouring flames. The fire had not gotten much headway and was confined to only one of the upper rooms. All ot the property. In that room was destroyed by the flames and much of the house was so thoroughly gutted with water that the loss will amount to about $800, fully covered by insurance.
