' . CtWTEST IS UP TO fOSLMITTEE The legislature has put the Hod-gln-Klddle contest up to a special committee of three. Just what this committee will do there Is no telling. Committees are very Important In legislation, sometimes they use them to chlororm a measure and put It to sleep. Many Is the bill that never sees daylight from a committee room; many Is the committeeman who remains all session on guard leat a bill get out of bin committee. And the contest may fare this way. The senate will not use much time upon It, that Is certain. There Is a disposition this session to make a handsome showing In quick work, and It will take but little talk on the part of any member to send such a matter as a contest off the floor and Into a committee's bands If some, one succeeds lu bringing the matter before the whole body. We still believe that the failure to count all of the votes In tne two counties will be one of the- principal objections raised. And It la possible if the entire vote had been counted Kiddle would have showed sufficient lead that - there would have been no need of a con test before the legislature. County Clerk Fields of Multnomah county has been the victim of a slate house scheme to besmirch his char acter by suffering a charge of short' .r.ge n accounts. Fields was not short but had the state overpaid, and thus a man of Integrity Is forced to go nto court to defend himself against an absoltely false charge. - The supreme court of Idaho will never know exaotly what they 'have done to Mr. Cruzori. and the other newspaper men until they come up for re-election. It Is said Mayor Rushlight of Port land Is undecided whether he should run for a second term as chief eiec tutive of that city. He may be, but there are many people who have watched bis administration who could quickly advise him the right course to pursue. Watch the popularity of Senator Chamberlain grow dim as the differ ent Democratic factions lay down upon him for- support for their tav- orite sons. Chamberlain Is an ideal winner when his party Is In the mi' nority. Now, let us see If he Is big enough to handle the boys when they want something. No doubt Bennle Olcott Is sincere In his blue sky law, but the people turned It down, and as a man who yields to the wish of the people had not he ought to let the matter rest at that? Or does he wish to emulate the example of Governor West at the hanging bee, by Insinuating the peo ple did not, know what they were doing? The flgbt against the land shark Is entirely too late. Oregon should have begun it five years ago. Alan Is the easterner who has been fleeced on an Oregon land deal, each of which has done the state an Irrepar able damage. Placing the, land at the disposal of the actual settler at Its first cost Is the right plan to fol low. How far will the fight extend? Probably until some of the snide real estate firms place some advertising contracts of goodly size with the leading Portland papers.
