ing a very valuable addition to. the

W. B. Sargent, who had started on
a trip to San Francisco and had got
ten as far as Portland, was recalled
by the sudden Illness of Mrs. Alklne,
his mother-in-law. Mrs. Alklne Is
reported to be doing nicely today,
however.
Clinton Brown of La Grande was
a passenger to Hot lake this morn
ing. Brown has been in the regular
army service of the United States
and has passed the examination for a
lleutenantcy. He Is waiting for a call
to Join the infantry forces that may
invade Mexico. He was accompanied
to Hot Lake by his sister,. Flora
Brown.
C. J. Buhr of Lewlston, Idaho, and
E. L, Straves, connected with the Hub
chain of stores in Lewlston and Col
fax were in the city looking for a lo
cation. They are well pleased with
the prospects of the city and are in
tending to open a store in La Grande
provided they can get a building.

cordingly, the family went to Po
mona, Oregon, but the change In cli
mate did her little good. She was
brought back this morning . on a
Mretcher and the family will reside
In Elgin, their former home.
