New York, Jan. 8. The greatest distribution of dividends which , the1 country has ever known Is aow tak- j Ing place here during the opening weeks of the new year.: Not less than $100,000,000 it is estimated by experts is being sent out to owners of secur ities throughout the country as their share of the general prosperity. This Is said to be the largest amount of dlv Idends ever declared at one time In this country, and it will be distributed over nearly the whole United States. It has recently been brought out that, 247 of the leading corporations of the country have more than a million stockholders, and while some of these were undoubtedly counted twice it is still unquestionable that hundreds of thousands of people will share these record-breaking dividends. These companies, moreover, are only the more Important ones which are doing business here In the United States. Many others, of the first Importance, ' do not" have their headquarters In j New York, and In each case the divi dend Is but one-half or one-fourth of the total yearly payment to stocks holders. The most striking dividend of them all Is the melon which is be-, ing cut by the Deleware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad. This road, ap parently as a thank offering upon its deliverance from the famous "coal roads" suit in the supreme court, has apportioned $12,000,000 of new stock, to be sold to its present stockholders at par. As the road's stock now sells at nearly $(!00 a share, the privilege of participating In the new Issue is rec koned as being worth as much as a dl. rect dividend of $138 a share would be.
