One of the largest , rotary snow
plows In the world is to be assigned
to the mountain division of the O.-W.
out of La Grande. The plow which
has been in use for such work waa
found to be too small and did not
always develop the necessary power
to remove large heaps of snow from
the tracks. The old V shaped plow
which preceded the rotary was of
little use In these sections and the
rotary was Introduced. The new ro
tary will throw the snow away from
the track with great force and make
shoveling unnecessary.
It Is said the idea of the rotary
plow originated In the mind of a
pumper at Telocasot. He took ' the
Idea from the windmill. Men of means
took) up the thought, experimented
with It and evolved the present high-
power, efficient machine. But the
humble pumper got little or no credit

ly like the old rotary which has been
