MIGRATION OF WEEDS.
Hew a Seed Ripened In Asia May Take
Root In America.
Weeds migrate aa well as men. Ac
cording to the best authorities, there
are already 000 varieties at least of
weeds In New Englaud that were not
to be found there when the country I
was first settled. Within less than
twenty-five years after the landing of
the pilgrims one observer counted
more than forty new weeds the Euro
peans hsd brought them.
. . Nature employs ail sorts of methods
for spreading life about the planet and
does not seem to eft re whether the life
Is that of a weed or of a plant at for
human use. Indeed. It uses such un
romantic material as old rubber over
shoes for seed carriers, as many new
weeds have appeared In a valley in
Connecticut since a factory was estab
lished there that found use for such
casteff things.

- before the rubber is used, and from the

such an apparently unpromising place

If corn be old and dry It will not
pop satisfactorily. A few cells near
tbe center uf the grain may burst
but the general result will be unsatts
factory. At the base of the kernels,
where they are attached to the cob,
the cells appear to be driest and It
bos been observed that tbese cells are
seldom broken In the popping.
' Practically all the poxxra raised
for market In this country comes from
New Englaud. Great quantities of It
are popped, buttered and packed for
sale all over the United States.
