work for pay oji a school building

M. Crawford holds In a letter to Su
pclntendont J. C. Conley. Mr. Con
ley wrote for an opinion after the
uestion had arisen In a district where
one of the directors wan about the
only man In the neighborhood quali
fied to make needed alterations. The
law forbids a director to furnish any
supplies to the district or to do work
but it did not seem sufficiently ex
plicit on the pcint of whether the
director might help put the school In
order and receive pay for it.
Strict adherence to the law will
work a hardship in some small dis
tricts, where the directors are likely
to be the men who live nearest the
school house, and who are thus able
to care for It. In such cases It often
is difficult to get help to make repairs
and directors have had to do the
worn tnemselves.
Mr. Crawford's letter states: ,
"I have your letter of the 9th In-
stnnt asking for Information as to
whether or not a school director
could legally accent a contract at he
hands of th nttio,. i '
district, for the building of a school
house, or for any work In connec
tion therewith, ani receive nay from
the district: and replying I would
state that It Is the opinion of this
otllee that has been rendered hefore
that a director could not either di
rectly or indirectly have anything to
do with furnishing the district In the
