conservatives and insurgents in the
National Orange, now holding Its -an
nual convention In Spokane, and de
cision on a number of vital questions
will be reached, ,
One of the principal demands of the
Insurgents Is reinstatement to mem
bership in the national body of Geo.
B. Hampton of New York and James
Helm of Michigan. While the execu
tive committee, the "regualr author
ity" was meeting In one hotel, a cau
cus of Insurgent delegates under the
name, Conference of Progressive
States, held a session in another ho
tel, presided over by State Master W.
T. Creasey of Pennsylvania. The con
ference in making a determined cam
paign to secure ' the revocation of a
rule adopted at the Colu minis con
vention last year, empowering the
national grange to expel members
for.u subordinate granges.
The first victory for the insurgents
came in the unanimous adoplton of a
resolution congratulating states that
have granted suffrage to women.
Olio of the important acts of the
convention is adoption of a recom
mendation that Immediate steps be
taken to secure physical valuation efj
all railroads in the United States, up
on which valuation freight rates may
be based. Postal express and gov
ernment ownership of telegraph lines
also are favored by the adoption of a
report' of the transportation com
mittee, headed by. State Master C. B.
Kegley of Washington. '
National Master Oliver Wilson of
Illinois reported that In a little more
than a year $18,000 had been devoted
to extension of grange. "The use of
this fund", said Mr. Wilson, "has ac
cbmnllshed more this year than In
any year since 1S76. One new state,
onMtana, .has been organized, and
Wyoming Is about ready to follow.. It
is likely the same extension work will
continue the coming year."
