This year of 1912 has seen such a sundering of political ties as does not often occur In America, but it is all referable to so-called "progresslvism" just as slavery was responsible for the diverse tickets in ISfiO and the monetary question for the splltup of ; the Democratic party In 1900. The Dembrcats this year present a i mora united front than for many years past. Though the campaign that preceded the Baltimore conven- tion was an exceedingly spirited one. it apparently left no bitterness for the' restoration of harmony was almost' Instantaneous. Within a week after the delegates adjourned at Baltimore the several factions had cbme to gether with the single purpose of elect'ng the national ticket. The un successful opponents of Wilson tit Baltimore took to the stump 1.'. bis behalf and the Bryanltes and anti Bryan Ites of the olden days have re peatedly spoken from the same plat form during the campaign that Is Just closing. (The Republican party, on the other hand, has found Itself divided for the first time since the civil war. The Insurgents' who bolted the Republi can national convention at Chicago after the rcnomlnatlon of President Taft met In the same city a few weeks later and formed the Progressive par ty. Colonel Theodore Roosevelt, who had fought vainly to secure the "regu lar" Republican nomination, was named for president and Governor Johnson of California was selected as his running mate. The situation on the Republican side then became, complicated by the ract that the political affiliations of the electors In many of the states were In doubt, being claimed by botu the Taft and Roosevelt factions. The electoral controversies were finally settled In a manner more or less sat isfactory to both sides, though new and more serious perplexities may result from the same source In case the balloting Is close next Tuesday. A court decision bas left Taft with out representation on the electoral ticket in California where the Roose velt electors appear as Republicans. In Oklahoma-the two .Roosevelt elec tors appearing on the Republican ticket have aereed to vote for Taft if he carries the state. A similar agreement has been reached in Ore in Smith Dakota and Nebraska the Taft electors appear on the balv lot by petition. In the other states where controversies existed the origi nal Rmiaevelt electors have been re placed on the Republican ballot by Taft supporters. The next electoral college will be composed of 531 members, and the successful candidates for president and vice president must serure a to 'tnl of at least 26j to he elected. With three leading tickets In the field, in stead of two as in farmer presiden tial campaigns of late years, it Is eas ily within the range of possibilities that none of the three might secure tv sufficient electoral vote and that the election of the next president and vice president would devolve upon the national house of representatives. There will be 435 representatives In the next congress, all of whom will be elected on Tuesday except the few In iMnine and Vermont, which states held early elections.
