Undoubtedly the entrance of Jona
than Bourne Into the senatorial race
'has made the election of Tkm Selling
rot only poosible but probable. Thou-
aaadi of voter who were not voerlj
enthusiastic over Selling are now out
to beat Bourne, who has repudiated
the primary law and made monkey
out of the people who supported hloi,
thinking him sincere. The people are
resenting Bourne's movement to get
office in an earnest manner and they
are casting about to find the strong
est man opposing Bourne.
For a time Lane seemed to have
positive strength. But this melted
away when Senator Chamberlain, who
eeems to be an ardent admirer of
Bourne, entered the speaking cam
paign. Senator Chamberlain says
nothing against Bourne, you will no
tice thnt. He has ben charged with
loving Bourne politically and ho docs
not deny It in strong enough language
to make It positive. This weakens
Lane and turns many Democrats to
Bourne. Besides Bourne always did
have a Democratic following In Ore
gon ever siiice the days when lie
managed the Bryan campaign while
h-9 was' acting as secretary of the Re
publican elate central committee.
Bourne's political shrewdness
would never have permitted hlni to
have entered th- race now had he not
have had assurance from gome of the
prominent Democrats that he would
get some support. Ills "Popular Gov
ernment club" and "Non-Partisan
Senatorial club" ai only sweet
Bounding echoes, for Bourne plays
politics and the people are now be
ginning to realize It.

SHATTERED THE MOUNTAIN.
A Volcanio Outburst That Tore Kra
katoa Up by th Roots.
The eruption of Krakntoa. In the
Bunda strait Aug. 2S, 1883, still ranks
first among the appalling convulsions
of nature.
Krakuton was n volcanic mountain
midway between Sumatra and Java,
but it had lieen inactive since 1080. In
the spring of 1SS3 It begun to show
signs of activity. On tho 2Mb of
August hunt" explosions were heard,
and on the 2Sth came tho eruption
that fulrly shook the planet.
The eruption was followed by an
appalling darkness, with n downpour
of mud and sand. Then came a tre
mendous tidal movement, the water
receding and then returning and over
whelming the people on the shores.
The tidal wave was llfty feet high.
When Investigation became possible
It was found that Krnkatoa ImTcT burst,
throwing one part eight miles to the
north and hurling the other pnrt com
pletely over Umg island, seven miles
to the northeast. .
The great mountain was literally
torn up by the roots, ns was shown by
the fact that over the spot where the
exploded volcano had stood the sound
ing Hue found a depth of 100 fathoms,
or IKK) feet. ;Othcr soundings showed
thnt the bottom of the ocean for miles
around had lieen changed. Iblanda that
had never been seen before appeared
and others entirely disappeared.
The damage to human life, done
chiefly by the monster tidal waves,
has never lieen definitely estimated,
but It Is kuown that at least 100,000
perished. The loss was probably far
In excess of that number.
Some Idea of the force of the ex
plosion may lie had from the fact that
the waves that were started by It and
driven east und west from the nar
row straits, traveled across the oceans
end met on the other Ride of the globe.
Indeed, It was proved that these wuves
crossed at the antipodes nnd encircled
the iitrth no less than four times be
fore they got t'h' k to normul.
Ftriinge as It may seem, the detona
tion accompanying the explosion was
felt .THO miles away, while from Its
verv Immensity It was almost. Inaudi
ble to the dwellers iu thu Immediate

that the queer phenomena were due to
the fact that the awful explosion bad
filled the whole upper atmosphere with
thousands of tons of fine, dust, which
encircled the entire earth and changed

A Curious Canal.
Between Worsley and St. Helens, In
the north of England, Is the most re
markable canal In the world. It Is
underground from end to end and Is
sixteen miles long. In Lancashire the
coal mines are very extensive, half the
country being undermined, and. many
years ago the Duke of Bridgewater'a
managers thought they could save
money by transporting the coal under
ground Instead of on the surface. The
canal was constructed and the mines
connected and drained at the same
time. Ordinary cannlboats are used.
