Did you ever visit an apple orchard
when the harvest was on?
Well," its worth while.
A few days ago a reporter for the
Observer made the rounds at Imbler
and Allcel and the sight was a reve
lation, even unto a citizen of La
Grands who lives so near.
At the Tbronson Fruit Company's
orchard a number of people were em
ployed picking apples, while many
were busy in the packing depart
ment placing the fruit in boxes for
storage until the market is such as to
justify the owners to believe It has
reached the high point.
I Tho box maker at this plant makes
500 boxes a day and he Is a busy boy
from the time he starts until he
quits. The expert packers are from
Milton, Oregon, a fruit section that
has long been organized and devel
oped talent along these lines. The
most expert of the packers gets about
one hundred boxes daily to her credit,
which at 6 cents a box nets the pack
er a very nice salary. . .

Apples are like everything else
they go by grades. The extra fancy
Is the perfect apple showing 50 Der
cent color, the stem remaining In and
wholly free from blemish. The fancy
apples may have the stem out. have a
small blemish, hut must have size and
color. -When
the reporter visited this
orchard the packers were busily

extra fancy and fancy stock that was
to be seen. (Seemingly nature has
tried to. furnish this district with
every element that will produce the
extra fancy apple, and that is the
kind the grower rests his case upon."

supply the whole world.
Trees Seven Years Old.
The trees from which most of the
fruit was taken are but seven years
old. ; They stand In nerfect row
sentinels and the careful pruning and
spraying .makes them all look alike.
In some cases tree surgery has ben
adopted. Where a tree bears too
heavily and breaks a limb the
orchardlst runs a bolt throuch and
perhaps suspends the limb by a wire
irom ine main portion of the tree. The
wound when wrapped with tire tape
grows nicely together and the follow
ing season there Is little of no
trace ot the break.
Alfalfa Between Trees.
In the Tbronson orchard alfalfa is
raised between the trees and this
year three cuttings made an average
of six and one half tons to the acre.
The fact that alfalfa grows well Is a
proof of the claims of sublrrlgatlon
for wlthout-water close by alfalia Is
a plant that wil not develop.
The early frost this season decided
ly helped the fruit In the Imbler
Allcel district because it assisted in
giving a rich deep color. In most
localties a frost at the time we bad
one this year would haw brought
serious results, but In this district
where the trees experience hardy
weather from planting the frost is
withstood in a remarkably satisfactory
manner. Take the Gano aunle. for
instance, and there' are thousands of
Ganos around Imbler, the color this
year Is the best ever known in East
em Oregon. The frost, it Is claimed
by those who know, materially assist
cd the Gano. (The seven year old
Gano trees made an average of ten
boxes to the tree and ninety-five per
cent of the crop is perfect fruit. j
