Transportation problems have hith
erto been confined largely to railway
traffic, not because people failed to
realize the value of water transporta
tion, but because there bis been up
to this time an absence of proper leg-l
hlatlon to prevent railroad control ol

antee that the waterway would fur
nish a cheaper system than ii now In
vogue.
In discussing this subject recently,
Senator Simmons of North Carolina,
the ranking Democrat on tho commit
tee on Interoceanlc canals, said:
"Our coast line Is the greatest of
any country In the world, while our
Inland system of rivers, lakes and
sounds Is Incomparably superior to
that of any nation. While we have
developed to a high degree of efficien
cy many of our seaports ai l our 'ake
systems, and have done something to
ward the Improvement of our rivers,
little has been done compared to whnt
should have been done, ami what U
necessary to be done, to develop these
waterways to the highest pulnt of potentiality.
"Real Impetus has 'bee a given the
movement by the determination of the
government to extend the coast Hue
of the nation by Unking together the
two oceans by a canal capable of float
ing the largest modern vessel,
through the Isthmus of Panama. That
greatest of world undertakings Is
rapidly reaching completion, and H l:i
not too much to say that Its comple
tion will usher In a new area In com
mercial intercourse between our
Eastern and- Western seaboards and
i with the nations of the earth. The
sew conditions thus created, added
to the old conditions with our water
resources, admonish us that the gov
ernment cannot, without Ignoring Us
manifest duty, longer neglect to do
what may be necessary to develop to
their fullest extent our waterways, to
the end that, this great natural asset
may subserve It wanted purpose In
our national system of transporta
tion." Private capital, now that railroad
monopoly Is Impossible, can. now be
Invested In enterprise which' will
bring profltale return and at Ilia
same time Increase transportation fa
cilities. The country stands In need
of development along this line.
THE WOXDERS OF SCIENCE.

pected to grow cheaper before long!

that ducks and other wild birds may
be hatched like domesticated chicks
and tame barnyard fowl, via the In

Edith May, of , New York, who, after
the death of her first husband, Col.
