In these days of commercialism, graft and political corruption It Is refreshing to note the scope the young people's movement is taking for right eousness and good government Es pecially Is this true of the ChrUtlan Endeavor movement and of the Ep worth League of the M. E. church. Time was when church members of the old school could not be Indaced to enter the threshold of another de nomination. But things are changed. Denominational lines and party lines In politics count for little In these days. The first sub-dstrlct meeting of the Wallowa district of the Epworth league of the Methodist Episcopal church was held Oct 6th at Joseph and was well attended by delegation from Enterprise and Wallowa th white and red ribbons being much in evidence. The Enterprise delega' tlon was led by Rev. B. F. Meredith, while that from Wallowa was headed by Rev. A. W. James. I The following program was render ed: 4 p, m. Devotional, led by Rev. B, F. Meredith. 4:15 Address of Welcome by Ro tien Dlckerson of Joseph. 4:35 Addresses. 5:10 Duet Revs. Meredith and and Miller. 5:20 The Relation of the Epworlh Lengue; first, to Its members, by Rev. B. F. Meredith; second, to the young people of the community, by Rev. A. W. James; third, to the pastor by Rev, J. W. Miller of the local church. . 6:00 p. m. Dinner. . 7:00 p. m. Meeting of the Epworth League, led by C. H. Rudd of Joseph. 8:00 Special nyislc by the choir and sermon by Rev. A. W. James of Wallowa. In speaking on the relation of the Epworth League to Its members Rev. Meredith said among other things that It should be: First recreating; second it should be Informing; third, reform ing; and fourth, It should be trans forming. The subject of consideration at tse 7:00 o'clock meeting was that of Con servation and the relation between economic and moral forces, and ably led by Mr. Rudd. Rev. Cardinal Merry del Val. ) Cardinal Merry, del Val, the Papal secretary of state, was born October 10, 1865, In London, where his father was secretary of the Spanish embas sy'. He was educated at the famous Stoneyhurst college, the Jesuit Insti tution near London. In his youth he became acquainted with Cardinal Ram poll a, when the latter was papal nuncio at Madrid, and became his pro tege. In 1893 Del Val was appointed master to the robes to Pope Leo XIII., and thereafter his advancement was very rapid. . In 1896 be was sent to Canada to settle the dispute over what was known as the Manitoba school question. The next year he was sent to London as a special le gate to represent the Holy See at th diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria. Since 1903 tlc cardinal has been sec retary of state, a position demanding greta tact and executive ability. In his official position be has nothing to do with spiritual matters.
