Tiio : governor ta a Saleni man, so Is the secretary of state and the state treas-j urer. A great per cent of all the em- Iiloyes at ths Institution are from Salem. ' It may be that Salem has good men Tor the places, but we arise to a point j of personal privilege to state that ' Eastern Oregon has a few good men who are entitled to recognition. This great section of country east of the Cascades is a wealth producer and pays a lot of taxes Into the state treasury. Is this section to be forever Ignored? This year the voters have a chance to elect an Kastern Oregon man for secretary of st.ite. Elmer Kennedy, who is running against Ben Okott, .vas on a Umatilla county farm, and also lived a number of years In Baker City. He Is qualified for the place and every man In Eastern Oregon who has the feeling of pride for bis sec tion of the state that he should, can have no hesitancy in voting for Elmer Kennedy, thus getting Eastern Oregon on the map and helping to establish in this great state of Oregon that there is a section out here that Is en titled to consideration. Vote for Elmer Kennedy. He will uink-3 good. And there can no longer b any doubt of the danger to the land owner should Single Tax carry. Sir. U'Ren and the other advocates f tlw new idea ay they are only attempting to put over the "Graduated Tax." but U'Ren la noled for 'labeling his ware under misleading titles. He Is very :uuch like a wholesale whiskey houaa that ships liquor into dry territory usually the label belles the goods en closed. So It is with the "Graduated Tax." It Is nothing more nor less tha: the first wedge Into Oregon which will eventually bring about Single Tax. Without going Into tn merits of either side deeply at this time, please let the Evening Observer call attention to one thing: It singe tax carries tu this state be prepared for a period of such depression as never was known in the commonwealth. The reason for this Is apparent. No one will In vest a dollar In Oregon under single tax. Every investment will hi cur tailed and there will be a period of waiting for the crank and theorist to either pass on or become sane before any new industries are floated and be fore many of the old Industries will resume activity. Who will suffer during that waiting period? . Not the capital alone that is invest ed, for it usually can withstand any strain, but it will be the general pub lic which is forced to depend upon business enterprises for existence. Reform Is all right, bat when an at tempt Is made to put over Single Tax tinder the guise of reform we must necessarily oppose it for the welfare of every citizen of Oregon. Wasn't jthnt a storm of some size? And do you suppose the Progressive rally brought it on. When the ele ments take a hand In bombarding even the Hull Moose movement must take a buck seat. Improvements mace at Monmouth this year total $100,000. The .state normal school chapel is seated with chairs made In Oregon.
