Metered at tJie postoiilce at La Grande, Oregon, as second class matter scBsmirnox bates. ally, single cop j it BaJly, per week lie dally, per month lie A MATTER Or JUDGMENT. The Progressive (Bull Moae) party of Oregon held a mass meeting in Sal-1 em this week and named a state tkkeL Many Progressives "vho are not in the movement for office honestly believed that the way to assist the national ticket this year was to name no local candidates and thus show sincerely a arm stand for the primary law of Oregon. But in the mass meeting the sentiment was pronounced to name candidates for United States senator and congress. This same sentiment wanted to pick over the Republican ticket now before the people and pro tect their pets by calling them Pro gressives and not put out candidates against them. An action like this would have resolved into "fusion" of the kind that swallowed the Populist party in the nineties. It would also have shown plainly to the rank and Die of the voters of the state that the Progressive movement In Oregon was not a matter of principle but a vehi cle for aiding and assisting in Indi viduals. There was but one way to view the question. Either no ticket at all was the proper thing or a straight ticket clear down the line was .the proper thing, but under no circumstances could men who believe that Roosevelt should carry Oregon this year lend themselves to making up a political alate, the whole purpose of which would be to render assistance to some ambitious office seeker. , - first, the fight was made for no nominations In ttS mass meeting, but the majority was against such a pro ceeding. Then came the fight made by Jhe ones who had pets to protect. This was so apparent that It was necessary to make a fight against It. For Instance proteclton was asked for Secretary of State Oltott and claims were made that he is a Progressive, lrop?rly withdrew and did not accept the nomination. As a representative convention of the entire state the Dull Moose masti meeting failed for its members were chiefly Salem, Portland and nearby towns. But as a conveyor of outi monry which la about all that could bo gathered at this late date, it was in dicative by those present who tie j sincere of the lighting feeling po.ssos- l iu uic bimh; i.i-aiii.ii uiHCUW.e iom j l':a;!nn and against the st-'ullii:; of tie j presidential nomination, whuh afttr jail, is the pivot on which every l'ro ; givssive rct. There was also quite a following of Clyde B. Aitchlson, the Republican nominee for -railroad commissioner, and claims were made that it was a non-political ofTice. As a matter of fact Clyde B. Aitchlson never should have been nominated by the Republicans of Ore gon for he Is not the man for railroad commissioner. He is the very man the shipper cannot trust, hence his tindeslrablllty. These things wcre all mentioned and his fate was like 01 cott'a for 1m got a mau placed against him. One thing must be said of the Bull Moose mass meeting it was a free speech meeting; a meeting In whlc each voter spoke in plain English. This was best Illustrated by L. H. Mc- Mahan of Salem, who dellevered a lecture on Senator Bourne, which will probably go down in the history of the state as one of the tersest pieces of oratory that ever pierced the Salem atmosphere. 1 The nomination of George Joseph against Judge Eakln was at no time a serlnux nomination and Jnspph very I cal agent September 26th, 27th, 2Stb.
