Witnes seth the Portland Journal: Owing to the unsatisfactory basis for doing business In tli? butter, egg and cheese trade at this time, It is probable that another strong attempt will be made to establish an exchange here. An attempt was made som time ago by some of the leading intf nests but the plan' was downed by an eastern Importer who did not want the trade to gte together and find the real basis for prices. Such an exchange conducted In the proper manner would be a great bene fit to producers as well as wnoiesal- ers because It would establish prices dally by actual selling and offering. Under the proposed rules only actusl transactions can be taken as a mar ket basis, and this would do away with much of the manipulation that Is shown from time to time in the trade. The establishment of the exchange would likewise produce much benefit by forcing buyers and sellers to trade on a graded market. On such an ex change the eggs would be graded and the shipper who has large, clean and strictly fresh gathered eggs would re ceive more than the one with ordinary Quality. At present both get the same price In the market, therefore, no benefits are derived from turning out a better article. Frails. New home grown apples 75c per box. Oranges 40c to 60c.
