However, this Is the first killing frost that La Grande has had since last winter, the spring months going ty without any destructive frosts. It is probably true that a half score of years have not sen so severe and a visitation of Jack Frost as last night. The frost was general too, being felt more or less generally throughout the' country. The wind was cold, too. Knowles, conducting thn equity branch of circuit court, considered the case of Walter Glenn, plaintiff, vs. J. P. Wash, defendant, concerning foreclosure proceedings upon a mort gage held on a North Powder hotel. Mr. Wash, the owner of the hotel ad mits the mortgage upon the building but denies any lien upon the furniture therein. Mr Glenn claims that his mortgage Is upon both the building and the furniture. Several con-plications arose over the dispute and In all probability a Jury case will result at the coming session of the circuit court Judge. The scope of the ac nual conference Is a wide one and Is on of the banner attractions for La Grande In store next year. Twin Falls, Aug. 29. The Idaho ' Methodist conference In session here, today authorized by resolution the building of a Methodist college for Southern Idaho. Indications are that the college will be built at Gooding. A written communication was at hand from the citizens of Gooding, of fering what appears to be the beet proposition made yet for the school. Gooding offered the conference land and cash to the value ot 2t$3,000. In cluded in the offer Is land for a cam pus and some additional land. ; Last evening Chief McLachlen cal led a colored woman to account for her reported misconduct. She resides In the residence portion of Jefferson avenue and has been reported to have been running a disorderly house. Up on the accusation by the chief she ten tatively acknowledged her guilt and promised to marry a man who has been living with her, to move to some other locality and live a decent life, At first she pleaded that she had no money, and that her feeble mother was entirely dependent upon her, and that this man who is probably Mexi can and Italian, was her brother, However, upon being ordered out of town she still pleaded poverty and no means to leave, but shunned the of fer of the poor farm. Tom Word today declined tho position of special agnt to which he was appointed by Governor West lu the vice crusade. He said he was afraid he might not have authority to make arrests and he might have to face heavy damage suits if he entered houses and took persons into custody. Judge iMorrow of the circuit court has recognized H. M. Esterly, appoint ed by Governor West, as district at torney and also Walter S. Asher. ap pointed by Esterley as. his deputy. The grand Jury has continued in session, examining several witnesse. presumably regarding the conduct of District Attorney Cameron's office. Physlclaue have rushed from here on a special train, but they wise that the senator Is suffering from only a bad cold, and slight disorders of the stomach.
