But Two Arrests Hade During Dny,
Holdnp Last Night. '.
Yesterday was an exceptionally
quiet day for circus day in and around
the -police station. One' extra man
was placed on the force to keep order
but It was found necessary to arrest
only two people during the day, both
on the charge of drunkenness.
last evening near the "Y", two

from considerable of their hard-earned
coin. The police found several sus
pects but had to let them all go as
there was no evidence whatsoever
against them. They have a few clues
and some private theories, however,
that may lead to the apprehension of
the robbers.
La Grande's first skyscraper Is rap
idly nearlng completion. The roof is
now finished and the . windows and
sashed are being placed today. When
this Is completed the new Ave story
building will be enclosed and It will
take but a few weeks to finish the
Inside work. By the first of October
the date set or possibly before, the
structure will be ready to house the
many professional and business men
waiting to occupy their new offices.
This building will not attract the
present citizens alone, which would
amount ' to a mere change of office
but many new people are already
planning to come to La Orande and
locate In the Foley structure, and
there Is no danger that other build
ings will be left vacant as there has
not been a vacant store room and
hardly a vacant office room In La
Grande for years.

Travel Not Hampered at Elgin Says

While the new bridge Is being con
structed .at' Elgin, traffic will not be
hampered in any way, says Bridge Su
perintendent J. F. Campbell In setting
at rest the rumor, that traffic was clog
ged there. "We have built a tempor
ary bridge below the new, one, fences
have been built and traffic can go on

bridge Is being constructed," said Mr.
Campbell today.

ALLEY PAYING STABTED.
Busy Alley Torn up Preparatory to
Blrulithlc Paving- This Summer.
The alley between Adams and
Washington from Fourth . to Depot
street will be paved at once. Exca
vations were commenced this morn
ing and the by-way will be paved as
soon as possible. This is the first
piece of alley way to be paved In the
city but perhaps no other alley Is
used as much as this one. The two
principal meat shops of the city, the
creamery, postoffice and route teams,
bakeries and' various other (businesses
have great use for the pavement.

are nearly through with Main avey
