A baby giraffe Is the pride ol the
110-cage menageries of the Bnrnura
ft Bailey circus, which will spread its
acres of tents here for one perform
ance on next Tuesday afternoon. The
animal was born In the circus' win
ter quarters on January 31 last. No
less an authority than Colonel Theo
dore Roosuvelt predicted that she
would not thrive, citing the cases of
giraffes born In zoological garden
abroad and which survived only a few
days.
The undaunted circus Infant, how- j
ever, has been one of the lustiest In
mates of the travelling zoo since the
day she opened her eyes and toddled 1
about the cage. Advance agents prom
ise that she will be the cynosure of
wondering crowds here. The Wo
men's Political union of New York
City formally christened her "Miss
Suffrage" during the circus engage
ment In that city. s' .
There ana several adult giraffes in
the Barnum & Bailey menagerie.
Aside from the circus beasts, the mu
nicipal zoos In New York and Cincin
nati, O., contain the only giraffes in
thu Vnlted States, and under a re
cent ruling of the government none
may now enter the country. The Bar
num & Bnlley management has refus
ed a formal offer of $40,000 from the
London Geographical society for the
snle of Its herd.
The giraffe corrals are a popular
rendezvous fur tlitj supstitious cirrut
folk. They want the boasts to lick
their hands. Good luck, they think, is
sure to follow.
Last evening the Clerks defeated
the Railroaders by a score of five to
one In a well played game, consider
ing the absence of sunlight. Chllders
pitched a good game, . although wild

first class fielding, allowing but few
