city Monday evening In response to
a request of several men who have
been contemplating harvesting their
alfalfa crops for seed, says the Enter
prise Record-Chieftatn. He visited
the fields of C. S. Bradley and Carl
(Roe Monday evening and those of W.
C. Hinterman and L. B. Payne Tues
day morning before train time.
He was very agreeably surprised
. at the prospect of a seed' crop and
told the Inquirers they have made no
mistake in saving the crop for seed.
He said that while the alfalfa should
. make a normal growth In order to
produce seed it should not be forced
to make a growth as for hay.
"I notice that the recent rains have
caught much of the hay of the valley
down and unstacked, which will
probably render It unfit for ship
ment," said Mr. WIthycombe. From
the present outlook for a hay market
I wonld advise that every framer
prepare to buy stock of some kind
and feed the hay. r Money can be bor
rowed from banks for ths purpose.
"I bope some of, the farmers will
take advantave of 'ths opportunity
afforded and thus not be compelled
to carry over any hay. And then
there Is an added feature; the farmer
will make more money by feeding
the hay to live stock than he will
by selling it on the ordinary market,"
The County Fair association man
agement secured a promise from Mr.
WIthycombe during his visit In the
city that he would attend the fair
this fall and bring a comprehensive
exhibit of tbe grains and grasses
grown there.
"I believe the wheat raiser of your
county will be interested in my ex
periments In producing a hybred win
ter wheat,' said Mr. WIthycombe.
"Ths forty-fold Is a favorite winter
wheat in Eastern Oregon, but it has a
very loose head and shatters badly be
fore and during harvest. The Little
Club la a spring wheat and not so
good a producer, but the head is tight
and every seldom shatters.
"I have combined the two and have
produced a winter wheat that is a
fine producer and does not shatter.
The millers find that they can make
the best grades of flour by mixing
the forty-fold and the Little Club so
It occurred to me that a wheat pos
sessing the combined properties of the
forty-fold and Little Club would be a
very profitable crop to raise. I will
have tbe milling tests made on the
new hybred this fall, and if not per
fect will continue the experiments
and breeding until the milling prop
erties are perfected."

and children, but to cities as well. La Grande as a community is just emerging
fromthe condition of a village and assuming the aspect of a city. It is growing
toward the south and the Connordale Addition. Anyone doubting this statement
who will take the trouble to walk down Washington avenue and take note of the
activity in paving, grading, opening up of streets and building operations will be
convinced of that fact. As the city increases in size, its growth will continue
along these same lines. That is a matter of past experience and common sense.
