Ea Grande Elka returning from ffcrtland have nothing but the kindest at words for the way Portland enter tained the grand lodge. Not an Elk or a visitor who was not an Elk can talk for Are minutes without growing sathuslastlc over the matter, and all rejoice In the home pride of having tie metropolis of Oregon so thorough ly acquit herself as hostess to the great gathering from all over the na tion. Portland has set a pace that will be hard for other cities to surpass. Kothlng was apparently left undone to make It the greatest event of Elkdoui. Eastern people were surprised and made happy by the splendid showing md home people were delighted at their own efforts. It could not have been better Judg ing from the accounts given by the T,a Orande people who attended. THE 1IIC ItOI' HEM'S. Kature has been very kind once more to the Orande Rondo valley In providing a bumper crop of almost ov ary product. It Is a liaolt Dame Na ture hat), but it should not be over looked by any means anil taken for granted that It la a matter of course Tor oilier serf Ions of (1m country are net nearly no abundantly blessed, al though there Is a fair Hhowlug In many localities. Our fruit crop Is excellent and our jraln crop Is among the best. Every thing that gets money from the ground in the northwest Is grown here and hi abundance. It is little wonder that the Omaha Klks and all other Elks who stopped long enough to see the tnlley expressed themselves as anx ious to return and learn more about ibis section. 1THAT A FAIR MEANS TO INION ("OUSTY. One of the best things that this sec. tlon of the state can have Is a good talr. Without wishing to detract from the attractiveness of the lloundtip, for all like to and attend that event, ifes fact remains that a good county talr will survive longer and mean snore to tMs part of Oregon than will the Roundup or anything of that na ture. Union county is starting a talr that is bound to grow. There are no rea sons why It should not bo one of the Wg events of the state and It will be. At present It Is going through what eight he termed the nursing period. The raising of fundi to have the Init ial entertainment, which means the raising of sulllclent money to have proper ground and buildings mint b" tone. Two thlrds of the battle U over. Men who know what they are doir.g have given their time In superintending the work, besides subscribing liberally for stock. It is therefore Imperative that the remaining $'..000 to be raised in order to Insure proper grounds, buildings and the first fair should be raised at once so that work already started may proceed. Under the present management huge debts will not be contracted, neither will work go on without funds In sight to pay. thus establishing a floating debt. The proposed fair Is to be run on strictly business principles, which Is the only way for it to last and be made the permanent fair east of the mountains. Tonight the stockholders of the as sociation meet and everyone holding a share of stock should be present by all means. It is something that at this time needs earnest attention and it Is also something that If pushed nrooerly now will yield splendid re sults In the future. Be present at the" meeting tonight and take part in the work. mix BEEF IS HIGH. Beef haa recently registered the highest point In a quarter of a cen tury. The simple reason Is that with a growing demand for dressed beef, we are steadily running behind In live stock, with whlrh Is coupled the fart that, with corn at about SO cents a bushel, farmers find It too oynonslve to fatten cattle for the mar ket, observes Editor Bowen Of the Ba ker Democrat. Many of tie rar;s In the southwest have been MtrnM over to farming purposes and the farmers have not adjusted themselves to exten sive stock raising. e W. E. Skinner of Denver, president of the International Live Stock Expo sition association, points out that the P..i, lMidle of Texas, whli h u.-ed to produce from 300.000 to 400,000 calves a year, has now been turned over to farmers for the raising of cotton. New Mevlen has gene to raising citni3 frill' and Oklahoma Into extensive agricul ture. Stock on every farm, east as well as west. Is our only salvation Stull-fed oittle will be higher than range rn.'f 1. but we shall at least then be able to supply our need. We all suffer from high meat prices -luusiioj pun BJOnap tpmis s.ia(.ii:d ers. Packers hate hlsh prices as mui ii as the poor consumer. Packers make their biggest prolit when gross sale. are biggest. By curtailing sales, hU'u prices curtail the prollts of the pack er. Illgh-prlced corn, the short hay crop, decreasing live stock and in creasing demand are sufficiently re sponsible for the present era of high prices. In the nature of th c.me.t prices. In the nature of the cas". these conditions cannot be iiumed! atley Improved, especially that refer ring to the shortago In live stock. We may expect high price for same time to come. On May lo Portland. .Fre, Currey, the Hot Lake publicity m.in and one of the bivt known In his profession, was a La Grande visitor l.ist evening wltile on his way to Port land where be will spend a few days on business. He said the Like was filled with guests and that the pros pects fur the Institution were very bright Indeed. Mr. Currey had Intended to locate in Elgin In the newspaper business but other tilings presented themselves before he made the final move and he will now remain at the Lake Indell nltely taking cue of the publicity work. AVE LOSE TWO (5tM! MEN. La Grande is about to lose twn nf ;hor useful and energetic cltlrens, Chas. h. Cnihran, wlio was born In this val ley, who hopped clods and held plow 1 smiles In early life, will leave to : .,mo v for Portland where ho entp-s 'he law department of the O. V. It N. as trial lawyer for the company. N't. Cochran Is leaving a splendid law business In La Grande that he has worked hard to obtain and has held It through bis ability and unceasing nrrgy. Today he Is rocognlr.ed as one of the big lawyers of the state, else the railroad company would ao hare selected him for the place U did. His career Is one that, exemplifies what a boy can do It he has the will. Another prominent cltlten who ts scon to leave La Orande Is Dr. M k IMtl. who, In the medical profoseh t., occupies the same poshiou u do's y.r. Cochran in the legal profession. ; Dr. Hall haa been chosen by Ooverno-1 West to superintend the new state , hospital for the Insane at Pendleton. While La Grande people appreciate feeply this recognition of merit and worth and congratulate Ooverno- West on his Judgment, yet there U a pronounced feeling of rigret that the dector should locate elsewhere 'h-.c In this city. 1 Hnwever. life Is one continuous pn cess of change, and so long as thes two professional men go to better r i ward, to wider fields of labor and " nosltlons that will make of each o. tl em state characters the Evening Ob (,rvr and the neople of La Granae In general accept the change and wish them the advancement and pro3 terity that we feel Is certain to fol low. ' BETTER CHANCE HER DRESS. "The way women of the present day dress Is responsible for a large part of the crime throughout the country and In Chicago In particular." This statement wm made by Miss Varv Bartelme, newly appointed as sociate Judge, and the first woman Jurist in Illinois. "We need our old fashioned moth ers," continued Miss Bartelme. "to make their daughters dress properly. The war women dress Is enough to cause men to Insult them and treat them with disrespect and finally re sort to criminal practices. Nowadays girls apparently dress to display their physical Instead of maidenly charms "The savage women who wear sm-ceiv snvthlng are not nearly so vulgar as the modern woman who not only displays all the points of her fig ure, hut accen'iiates them by artifi cial means. In many cases, various remedies taken to relieve these conditions result in ruining the stomach and preventng It from digesting food :n natural way.
