General Leader for the Woman Vote - . Movement In Oregon Discourses Loral "votes for women" disciples are kept In close touch with Mrs. Wade, the Callfornlan suffragette, who Is making her headquarters in Pen dleton. Mrs. Wade has direct super vision of the spreading of the gospel In this section of Oregon. In a re cent letter to local club women and suffrage workers, Mrs. Wade writes: There Is an old saying that "straws show which way the wind blows," and If one is looking for straws pointing toward equal suffarge the preas col umns certainly are full of them, and the wind evidently is strongly set In that direction. Everywhere, and more and more women, are presenting their claims before all sorts of conventions and associations wherever they are gath ered together. The Massachusetts Universalis con ventlon, at Its 53rd annual meeting held last week in Brookline, Mass., passed with but few dissenting votes a resolution offered by Rev. Ada C. Bowles squarely endorsing woman suffrage and committing the church to aid the reform. Mra. Bowles took hundreds of suff rage leaflets to the convention, and put them Into the hands of the minis ters. All through the proceedings she watched for her chance (which some of the brethren earnestly hoped stie would not get) to offer her resolution. When the committee on official re ports came to that on "Social Ser vice," outlining the plans for the so. cial service work to be undertaken by the churches of the Unlvesrallst de nomination, her opportunity came. Speaking of a series of thirteen arti cles by ministers that had appeared recently in the Universallst official paper regarding this plan, she said that not a one of them had even men tioned a word in behalf of one half of the world's population that had been repressed so many years, to the injury of the race "as a whole. She Hien offered the suffrage resolution, it was carried on an aye and no ole. The Unitarian State convention also passed a similar resolution at its re cent meeting In Boston. The General Federation of Wo men's Clul.'s, soon to meet In San Francisco, will bring many of the representative women of the east, west, north and south face to face with the women of the great free states of the Pacific slope, (alas, for our Oreson!) and it U likely that the few antis, if they are any, will see the great light. Eastern Oregon sent a good delegation to the last bien nial meeting on this coast. Are the club women of this part of the state quite as alive to great public ques tions as they were a dozen years ago? They do fine work locally, but how about the broader vision? An antl-suffraglst once said, "Wo. mans unfitness for the ballot neces sitates her continuance In a narrow environment." This reminds us of the old negro who was asked why he did not seek religion.
