Col. Edward D. Meier former pres
ident of the American Society of Me
chanical Engineers, -was born In St.
Louis, May 30, 1841, and graduated
from Washington university, St Louts,
and from the Royal Polytechnic Col
lege of Hanover. . This was followed
by an apprenticeship In a locomotive
works in New Jersey. At the begin
ning of the civil war he enlisted In
the union army as a private and later
was commissioned a lieutenant. Dur
ing the 20 years that followed the !
close of the war Col. Meier was asso
ciated with several leading railroads
ard manufacturing , concern In the
capacity of consulting engineer. ' He
Introduced one of the first water tube
boilers into the United States and of
late years has been prominent In the
manufacture of boilers and engines.
