Fire Department Automobiles Make It With Ease - The new LaFrauce auto chemical paid a visit to this city yesterday af ternoon to have a try-out before the members of the municipal council and Chief Thomas Harris of the Are de partment. Although - the - chemical showed that it has great speed quali ties, it was rather shy on the hill climbing stunts and fell far short of the performance of the auto chemicals now owned by this city. V ; -: ;::i-."5r The chemical arrived at the Broad street engine house at 2 o'clock and was met by Mayor William P. Gonnery Commissioner of Finance Frank A. Turnbull, . Commissioner of Streets George H. McPhetres, Water Commis sioner Thomas Campbell; 2nd., and Chief Thomas A. Harris. The start was Immediately made to see what the machine could do. The first trip was to Bay View avenue, off Western avenue, which Is one of the toughest hills In the city to climb. The auto started at full speed lip the hill, got about two-thirds of the way, sputtered, coughed and then stopped and stayed1 stopped. She was backed down the hill and another trial made, with the same result. On the trips up the hill the machine had several men aboard and a thousand feet of hose la the body of the machine, . , From Bay View avenue, the chemi cal then went to Grant street, c'.ose by which It skimmed up with ease. From there it went to Lovers' Leap aenue and reached the peak of this hill In an easy fashion. .The operator then showed what great speed the machine is capable of. making by sending It through the streets about Myrtle street at &. rate of speed close to 50 R, A. Wllkerson went to Meacham this morning to close ' negotiations with the school board of that district to assume charge of the school there next year. McCarty, a land owner of Wal- idwa' county, was In La Grande last night on his way to Baker. H.' M. Covey and wife arrived today from The Dalles where . they took their automobiles through to La Grande. They- came from .Pendleton this morning and went on to Baker tls afternoon, intending to return to their home from that point. They shipped their Cadillac from Portland, their home, to The Dalles. The ma chine Is one of the self starters seen here this year. , ;' " Dallas Entertains Bed Men Dallas, Tex., May 28. Elaborate arrangements have been provided by this city for the entertainment of the hundreds of visitors which have gath ered here to attend the annual ses sion of the Great Council of Texas, Improved' Order of Red Men, which opened Its three days' session here today. At the opening session Mayor W. M. Holland welcomed the dele gates on behalf of the city and re sponses were made by George B. Griggs of Houston, Dr.H. 6. Sapp Ingtnp, Great Sachem for the Great Council and Great Senior Sagamore W. H. Marsh of Tyler. The memorial address, was delivered by Hon, Wm. H. Atwell of Dallas. Games at Walla Walla Likely. TO GO UP HILL Too Much for La miles an hour, making those who were in It cling on for their lives. : After the test the machine returned to the Broad street house where the hose was left and then it went over the road to . Salem to 'give a demon stration there as the Witch city is to buy an auto chemical next week. The chemical is a powerful machine of 70 horsepower and is capable of going 60 ! miles. an hour, sho carries two chem ical tanks,-each of which holds 35 gallons of water and also has a water line. The rear part of the machine is divided into two parts 'each of which la capable of carrying 500 feet of hose. After the auto had concluded its test the commissioners expressed a wish to see it the autos owned by the city could climb Bay View avenue where the other had met its Waterloo. Chief Harris first called out chemical three of Tower hill, which Is a Knox ma chine. She arrived at the foot of the hill in shsrt order. While the La France machine had made a flying start up the hill, the Knox auto was stopped on Western avenue and then sent up the hlM.
