Congress has recently passed a new
law providing for the sale of Isolated
i lnnds, which will now make It possl
j ble for persons owning land in
mountainous country, like Eastern
Oregon, to purchase 160 acres of graz
Ing land under the new law, whether
the same Is isolated or not. Hereto
fore, isolated land could not be pur
chased unless it had been isolated for
a period of two years, and all the
surrounding lnnd had been entered
for the same period. ; It also required
that a tract must bo vacant and mib
Ject to homestead entry before it was
subject to sale as an. Isolated tract
This law, however, has not been re
pealed; buf an additional amendment
has been mnde, giving the law a wid
er scope.
Must Flic Application.
An applicant to purchase isolated
laud under the new law, must file his
application in the local land o(nce;
showing that he Is the owner of the
and joining the lJd applied for, or
that he holds a valid entry embracing
adjoining land, in connection with
which, the laws have been fully com
plied with; also detailed evidence as
to the character of the land applied
for, the extent to which it is cultlv
able and the conditions which render
the greater portion unfit for cultiva
tion, also a description of all lands
heretofore purchased under section
2455, of the revised statutes, of which
the new law is an amendment. This
evidence must consist of the a(Hda'it
of the applicant, corroborated by two
or more disinterested persons having
actual knowledge of the facts.
No sale will be authorized under
the now law upon the application of
a person who has procured one offer
ing thereunder except upon a showing
of strong necessity therefor, owing to
some peculiar condition which pre
vented original application for the
full area allowed to be sold at one
time, which is 160 acres. In other
words, one application under this new
act will exhaust the right of any
person, providing the first application
embraces less than 160, except upon a
strong showing which would . justify
the allowance of the second applica
tion or some condition which prevent
ed him from applying for the full j
160 acres In his first application, and
