Lewiston, Ida., May 27. The Open
River Transportatlbn company baa
prepared a. comparative statement of
rates for wool shipments to the Eobcoii
market as between the all rail joute
and the rail and water route by which
the product Is handled when shipped
through the 0rn River company. '
The schedule published provides-for
rail shipments to Portland where the
shipment Is turned over to the steam
ships for transportation to the isthmus
and after being carried by rail to the
gulf Is again loaded on , vessels ' for
transportation to New Yprk. The de
livery from New York to Bostoii is
made by rail. Points located on the
Snake and upper Columbia river where
the advantages of the river transpor
tation are enjoyed, are given a lower
rate than Is quoted in the new tariff
but even providing for the rail rate
Into Portland, the water route otters a
lower freight rate for wool In bales'
from points In south Idaho as far east
as MInldeka, all section of Eastern
Oregon and eastern Washington. The
rail and water rate from Minidoka
to Boston Is $1.66 for wool In bales as
against $1.57 for the all rail transpor
tation. '
In the Lewiston country all wonl Is
handled In sacks and the comparative
rates with rail shipment to Portland
are: All rail to Boston $1.87 per hun
dred; rail and water to Boston, $1.65
per hundred. The former rail rate
from Lewiston to Boston was $2,11) per
hundred but the new quotation is the
rate fixed by the Interstate commerce
commission. . The rate from The
Dalles for wool in sacks, rati and wa
ter is $1.08 as against $1.40 for all rail
shipments. The same per cent of re
ductions is, provided for practlsally
all sections of Idaho, Washington and
Oregon and suggest the advantages to
be enjoyed-by, these communities when
the Panama "canal is completed and
the improvements of the rivers permit
unobstructed navigation from Port
land to the heads of navigation on both
the Snake and Columbia rivers.
