Three year lease contracts for the
fifth or top tloor of the Foley build
ing were successfully negotiated last
evening when - the directors of the
Commercial club .took up the matter
with the builders. The entire fifth
floor will be at the disposal of the
-club and as Mr,- Foley in turn has a
contract,with his contractors to have
the big skyscraper completed this
fall. - the . club directors can have a
three year and probably . permanent
home for the membership by Christ
mas at the very latset.v : . ;

To fill the vacancy caused by the
resignation of Secretary J. T. Wil
liamson, handed to the directors at
the last, meeting ,A. B. Cherry' was

Will Arrange Exhibits.
X" matter that was given considera
tion last night was the collection-of
fruits and exhibits. In which the Jars
used for several years ago when an
exhibit , was maintained, will be res
urrected .and put to use. The direc
tors will maintain an exhibit of some
Bort, thought' the finer details must
be worked out as conditions develop.!
Because there will be train after train
of Elks and other- coast visitors
through the city thiB summer an ex
hibit will be greatly needed, in fact,
it is apparent that La Grande must
do something as a community to en
tertain the Bpeclal tralas of Elks if
she would not .be outdone by other
towns along the main line. .,

FINE PROGRAM
MASY TURNED AWAY FROM THE
SCHOOL FUNCTION.

The Island City school gave its
closing program last night. By eight
o'clock the church was packed to the
doors. ' Every available space was ta
ken and standing room was at a pre
mium. Several went back home disap
pointed because they could find noj
room. ' But for those wno couia nna
a place to sit or stand the program
far exceeded their expectations.. Many
who came from La Grande went
home praising the work done by the
students. .
The curtains were just nicely out
of the way when 'a chorus of the boys ,
and girls . from the primary room
burst forth in ja rollicking song. When
the curtains 'were again drawn the
size of students bad changed and girls
of the fourth and fifth grades sang a
very pleasing chorus. . Following this
ten boys produced a dialogue, which
brought a smile to many of the audi
ence, "When I'm a Man.'.
''After a few minutes intermission,
the curtain was again drawn on an
Office scene. Mrs. J. F. . Shortstop,
secretary of the "Great Doughnut
Corporation'', was seated at his desk.1

tomer broke her tooth on a sample
doughnut, ' another went off augry

vested ten dollars came in. Needless
to say, the scene closed after some
quick moving with Sairy, armed with

The closing numuer was a cantata,
"The Festival of Flowers." The work
of - these girls wao splendm as by
ipeech and son--, moy tressed - the
true attitude of the flowers to man
and God.' Nellie Storey as Roue car
ried the leading part in a wonderful
manner. , Lucia Tiiton as Hollyhock
and Nlta Hunter as Crysantnenium. al
so deserve special mention for their
solo work. : It was a splendid chorus
of girls.
Island City school has had a most
successful year under - a splendid
corps of teachers, and thi. program
proved to be a fitting close of . the
work done. ,. - .-.
E. E. Arant left last nlgut for his
home in Monmouth, Miss Balicy and
Miss Spencer left this morning for
Elgin; and Miss Crouter leaves today
for her home in Union "We shall miss
them at the Island but. we do . wish
them a splendid time during their va
cation," said an Island City resident
