Rendeivons for Tramps Burned to the
Ground Last Night .
Partially ruined remains of the
Phillips property, corner C and Sec
ond, South La Grande, that tor the
past year or more have been a splen
did rendezvous for tramps since It
was first fired a year or more ago,
were completely destroyed by a fire
early this morning. The property
was worthless and an .eyesore prevl'
pusly. . The .fire department responded
to the call and stood by to prevent
a spread of the fire to adjoining prop
erty but at no time was there serious
danger of ignition in other homes in
that vicinity. The South La Grande
department responded and one hose
wagon went to the scene from here

Mount Hood Railway company was
in the city yesterday, says the Bake
Democrat,- Mr. Hyland was formerly.

nected with the Hassam; Pavement
company, and he was particularly en
thusiastto about the pavement -com
pleted and contemplated here.

An Art That Want Out With tht Old
Woodan Warships.
An almost forgotten profession Is
that of ship carving. For many cen
turies, down to the beginning of the
nineteenth, the orno mentation of ven
sels, especially men of war,. was pro
fuse, intricate and florid. The carving
on the United States line of battle
ship America, launched lu 1782 and
presented to Pninre. will give some
idea of the extent to which this was
carried. .-.-'
The figurehead wna a femnle figure
crowned with laurel representing
America, The right urm was raised,
pointing to hen ven. On the left arm
was a buckler with n blue ground cur
rylng thirteen Hturs. On the stern of
the ship under the cabin windows ap
peared two large figures In bas-relief
representing "Tyranny" and "Oppres
sion" bound and - bleeding, on the
ground. On tbe back of the starboard
quarter was a large figure of , "Mars.',!
On the highest part of tbe stern ap
peared "Wisdom" and above her bead

greatest ship designer In tbe Dnlted
States, but also the best ship carver In
the world, Wllllitro Rush. In this field
be was without a rival, and to a won
derful technical skill be added an ar
tistic sense of beauty and genius for
composition. .
He was the first carver to give an
idea of life and motion to a ship's fig
urehead. Each of bin figureheads was
either tbe lifelike representation of s
person or some symbolic concoptlou
expressed in exquisite carving. His
most noted productions were "Nature"
for the Constellation, tbe "Genius of
the United States" for tbe frigate of
that name and "The River God" for
the Bast India ship Ganges. These fig
ureheads were nine feel blgb and
could be removed for repair or in action.-Harper's
