Sheriff Childers left last night for Walla Witlla where officers are hold ing T. W. Ayer on a charge of rais ing a check when he was working for the Palmer Lumber, company of this city. The alleged crime was commit ted last January and the check which was given for $4.00 was raised to $40. Frank Smith of Elgin cashed the check and Ayer left the state immed iately. Sheriff Childers has had his weather eye out for the man ever since and yesterday located him near Walla Walla. Litigation growing out of govern ment objections to the number of inches of water assigned to the state insane asylum near Pendleton, brought Attorpey General A. M. Craw ford of Salem to La Grande. He is attending the May term of the su preme court but he is here today conferring with Water Superintendent Geo. T. Cochran relative to the water situation in Umatilla county. Parties who owned the land prior to the pur-, chase by the state for asylum pur poses, laid claim to about 2 inches of Umatilla water. ,The government has objected to this amount, conceding the state's right to about one-half Inch and the attorney general is here look ing up data on the situation. Super intendent Cochran will take testimony in this case and many others at Pen dleton next 'Monday. Attorney General Crawford returns to Pendleton tonight to further repre sent the state in the supreme court spbfIoh wherein Wallowa bootlegging cases are the chipf matters under con sideration.
