This one is from E. U. Plillllpa of
Portland, who made a short visit to
La Grande recently, Listen to what
he says:
"Just a word to' the Rood people of
the valley; wake up and look about
and try and realize where you live,
and what you have. Since my return
to my home In Portland I have felt
a kind of La Grande Sickness come
over me, and I And myRtelf talking
Grande Rondo valley. How eager the
people listen to me. . They are all
anxious to go somewhere to get a
small tract. But It occured to me
that I must not talk five and ten acre
tracts on account of conditions there.
1 was not asleep while there. In pas
sing I want to say that you have
some wide awake real estate men
there that would soon make the val
ley worth a trip to see. And If you
want to paps this letter up, all well.
But I beg of you to listen to those
men. I will say again you do not
fcnow what you have there; lot these
wide awake men show you. Will I be
presumptlous, when I try and tell yon
why you have not a city of IB or 20
thousand people. T was more than
'pleased to talk to some of the best
citizens In ' the valley. .They agree
with me when I tell them they must
cut up their great holdings. You

wake up and let the people here and

THE SEW FAIR ASSOCIATES.
The new fair association Is a cer
tainty. La Grande will be In shape to
entertain Eastern Oregon people as
they never have been entertained be
fore. Some thought the day of county
fairs and horse races was over. Not
so. The horse is still the only race
that gets the blood to sparkling and
makes the old man think he is young,
and causes women to shout and hurl
their handkerchiefs skyward.
Host of the readers have witnessed
automobile races. They are line and
furnish some amusement, but some
thing Is lacking. They are Insipid
and tasteless compared with , a
well contested horse race where ev
erybody, swears at the Jockey for pul
ling a horse and others are certain
their horse Is going, to win.
There is no tonic In all this world
like a horse race.
And the only way to have horse
races Is to have a fair ground with
a well built' race cours.e Just as La
Grande Is now having constructed.
All work done on the new associ
ation grounds will be permanent.
Considerable money has already been
raised and more Is sure to follow for
the construction of what without
doubt Is to become the permanent
race course of all Oregon east of the
Cascade mountains.
The exhibit feature of the fair will
not be overlooked for some of the
very best ranchers and fruit growers
are stockholders and members of the
association. ....., ' ' .
It Is a crowd of unanimous people
who want to Install1 In La Grnade.the
horse racing, and fair of this entire
section, and success is sure to crown
their efforts. . 1
HAVE YOU VISITED THE SCHOOLS
THIS YEARl f
How many patrons ot the La
Grande public schools have visited
the high school and grades this sea
son? Come, be frank, admit It If you have
not, been there and there are very
few who have been.
Then, answer the question of why
did you not attend?
You know. La Grande as a com
munity is spending a great deal of
money to have a good school. You
know there 1b ouite a nay roll of
teachers; that there are many new
things being added to equipment. Yes,
you read about all of those things,
yet you do not take the time to see
what is going on.
Is it better that the community
should show such a disposition to
ward the public schools, or should it
be as the small village was years ago
when the hiring of the teacher was
the chief topic of conversation for
six months and the actions of the
teacher was the topic for the other
six months?
.-.But, surely It Is worth while to
'spena a nair nay wiin uie youngsters
and the people who are working hard
to mould the mind of the young, sure
ily It. Is but right that a parent should
become socially acquainted with the
young man or young woman who Is
teaching that parent's child, and who
hni custody of the child as great a
portldn of the time as does the par-
out himself.
Those are more stthbestlons to La
Grande peoplo. Understand?

hold court and was in a very fine
frame of mind.

Undoubtedlv the judge sprj'ke the
sentiment of every person who has
lived here. Th' man who could not
recall the bracing air of both sum
mer and winter, who could not be
mindful of the splendid appetite, the
trout fishing and the hunting of this
Eastern Oregon paradise would in
deed be too dull to comprehend any
thing of value in this world.
That gentleman called Woodrow
Wilson Is getting one of those passive
anaesthetics which Murse Watterson
and few other stalwart democrats are
so capable of giving.
The rubber trust has declared a

for one thing, that the sale of hot
