The bill, in addition, to outlawing the parlor match, prevents "the marketing of de fective goods In boxes not plainly marked as such, which will put an end to the common practice of manufactur ers of selling defective matches in Job lots to the cheap retail trade. The bill also regulates the packing and storing of matches, together with the numher of matches in a bo and the number of boxes In a base, as well as the size and material of the packing case, in these regards complying with the reg ulations made by the interstate com merce commission anj the bureau for the transportation of explosives. The agitation to prevent loss by fires has been conducted by the insur ance companies of the United States for several months. They realize that if they can minimize or reduce the number of fires and the losses, they will be the trainers thereby. Their ob ject is two-fold, selfish on one hand and as a benefit to the community on the other. We feel constrained to say that If the Insurance companies were more careful In the taking of risks, that many fires, The origin of which is now nut down as "unknown" would be pre vented. That the steer age passengers on board the Titanic knew nothing of the accident which had befallen the vessel until a torrent of water rushed into" their quarters was the testimony given to Senator Smith, chairman of the Titanic Inves tigating committee of the senate, by Daniel Buckley, aged 21. county of Cork, Ireland who was a steerage pas senger.
