preme' court of the United States held
the commission to be in the right.

per cent reduction on 'freight destined
for La Grande from the east, has re
ceived notification of the date set by
the Interstate commerce commission,
on which time all interested parties
the railroads in this instance can
show cause why the June 7th rates
should not be immediately invoked, V
This' is the now famous decision
which found that freight originating In
territory where there is no water com
petition, is entitled to' a higher rate
than where there is water competl
Uon, but on thi other hand the general
scale of rates was lowered about 30
per cent. This included some 600 com
modities. At the same time the com
mission divided the country into lm
aglnery zones and decreed what ' dis
tricts had water competition and what
not. The railroads secured an injunc
tion against the commission's invok
ing these rates on November 15th last,
year through the court of commerce
which eventually held that the com
mission had no authorityi to establish
these zones and thereby nullified the
decision. The commission carried it
to the supreme court and won the enso
with the result that after May 8th un
less further litigation is lnauguraed
the lower rates on west'bound freight
will become effective immediately.
