of a resolution adopt&d by the com
mon council of the city of La Grande,
Oregon, on the tub day of April, 1911,
creating Bewer Improvement district
No. 2, and designating such district,
and In pursuance of a resolution
adopted by said common council on

tersection of Fir street and Jefferson
avenue, thence southeatserly along the

avenue with Spruce street, thence

Spruce street 150 feet, thence nortn
westerly along the southerly boundury
of the 0. W. R. & N. right of way to

the council will levy a special assess
ment on all the property affected aul
benefited by such improvement for
the purpose of paying for such im
provement. That the estimated cost

$1081.04. That the council will, on
the 17th day of April, 1912, meet at

In a telegram dated April 11, Sen
ator Joseph M. Dixon, Roosevelt, cam
pnlgn manager, tells just how beyond
comment the tactics of the Taft ma.

Strong Arm Men i Used.
WASHINGTON, D. C The on
rageous tactics of the Taft machin
reached a climax here today in th
Michigan Stale Convention. Through
the assistance of Charles D. Warren
of Sugar Trust notoriety,", they put
bunch of 50 or 60 strong arm men
with revolvers and clubs, in the con
vention hall to bar out Roosevelt dele
gates. ' , 5
, "The Mayor, of Ray City called on
Governor psliorn for protection..- The
Governor ordered ' out troops and
cleared the jail. Taft men raise
rough house. Two conventions were
held in the same hall the same night.
"One convention Instructed Its dele
gates for Taft, one for Roosevelt.
Roosevelt Defeats Clark.
"Roorrevelt fortes have won in the
fourth, fifth and ninth Michigan dis
tricts, thus giving six more delegates
to the Roosevelt column, who has now
three delegates pledged to every one
of Tuft's, making it practically im
possible for the President to be re
nominated. 'Final returns, from Illinois gUe
special 'significance to the Roosevelt
victory there Tuesday. Roosev-!?'
total vote was 252,020;- Taft, 122,'J7
i.a Follette, -10,058. The total He
publican vote was 410,502; total Dem
ocratic vote 2Sfl.5!)0; Republican ma
jority 120,975.
"Tills; proves the solid' Republican
strength of Illinois. Champ " Clark,
lending .Democratic .candidate, received
211.809, a majority of 88,831 over Taft.
''This shows what Illinois would do
!f Clark and Tuft were opposing candi

Roosevelt Meetings Many.
"Clark's vote was 40,817 less than
Roosevelt's, which Is quite another
story and shows what Illinois would do
if Clark and Roosevelt were the candl
dates in the Presidential campaign."
Roosevelt, meetings are being hold
all over' Portland. There seems', no
doubt but that be will bo nominated In
Oregon by a large .majority. ,
Already the Taft forces are admit
ting that they are considerably wor
ried. The. cause of their worry Is the
progress the Roosevelt campaign has

deal" finally consented to being the
