The department of agriculture at
Washington holds out the hope that
tea may be produced in the United
States at a profit and In quantities
sufficient to meet the demand here.
The Imports of tea annually are from J
16,000,000 to $17,000,000. The depart
ment gives the results of experiments
which lead to the conclusion that tea
raising can be made to "pay." But the
work calls for large capital and for
skill and care. Not less than $50,000
would be required to finance a tea
plantation of two hundred acres, and
It would b"e several years before any
income would be received. Then, with
-the right supervision and marketing,
it would be possible to secure a prof
it, and the Indebtedness could be paid
In 16 years. ' After that It would be
"velvet" with a steady income of $10,
000 annually. This may prove Invit
ing to those who have borrowing abil-1 p
ity, patience and "nerve," but the 4
probability is that we shall continue i
