to La Grande today in a film being
run at the Isis theatre. The film shows
the wonderful waterfalls In a clear
and exceptionally Interesting manner.
In addition to this beautiful scenic
production the, Pathe Weekly portray
al of current events Is entertaining
the Isis houses.

We wish to call the attention of tho
public to ah article in the Observer
of the 5th Inst, from the Valley cream
ery, In which they say that "other lo
cal creameries are underselling them
in order to get, a temporary advant
age wlt'h the local dealers while they
are striving to encourage dairymen
to help build up the dairy Interests by
paying the highest possible price for
cream." .. , ,
Before the coming of the Valley
Creamery to La Grande there was
Bomo advantage to the dealers by hav
ing a creamery 'here, but things have
changed, (Mr. Emigh began by charg
ing the local grocer one cent more
than he did the inan who lived fit
Hllgard, Kamelal ' and other towns
along the line, and at the same time
paid no more for butterfat than we
did; as based on the Portland market.
Not satisfied with this, they present
ed the dealer: who was v fortunate
enough not to live in. La Grande, with
another cut of a cent a pound, thus
charging the unfortunate grocer who
lives In a creamery town two cents
more than Hie one who doesn't. Then
thev have the audacity to say that
other local creameries are undersell
ing them in order to get a temporary
advantage with the retail dealers,'

V ln a circular letter Issued about the
time of our County Fair last fall Mr.
Emigh said, "before we located here,
local creameries fixed their price of
butterfat by the Portland ., market,
while now the price is Axed at Walla
Walla.";; f
He also Bold, "Butter fat has been
very low in the Portland markets this
Bummer'and'"we . believe that we, by
fixing the price of butter, fat and forc
ing others to follow, have savod to tho
dairymen of these counties, hundreds
of dollars." v. r
' We wish to say to the dairymen that
the price of butter fat since the Val
ley creamery came here,, has never
been above the Portland butter mar
ket. o Furthermore, all the drops In the
price of butter, and consequently but
terfat, 'have been first made by the
Valley Creamery, They advertise the
advances but they have not always
made them. (First.)
About the 23rd. of January, when
the Portland quotation was 89c the
Valley creamery dropped the price 2c,
making it 35c a pound 'here.. Febru
ary 1st, they dropped to 33c, on which
date the Portland quotatalon was 37c.

price is fixed at Walla Wallo, and It
has been as much as 4c under Port
land.. .
C About February 19th, Mr. Emigh ad
vanced the- nric.e of butter from 83
to 35 cents, locally, and two days later
the 21str he mailod cards to our out
of town trade, quoting 31 for butter,
and dropped the price to 33c again
to-1here. ' ,' . ,
Now on a falling market he advanc
es the price to 35 cents and because
we do not ee the justice in it ,and
muke the advance also, he accuses ns
of underselling them to get a tempo!
nry advantage.
When Mr. Emigh started his cream
ery here; he came to us to get "our
prices on ice cream, and to see if we
could agree on butter prices.
: We could not see the justice In
charging our local grocers a . cent
more than we did out of town deulers
so no agreement was reached.
We gave him our lee cream prices
with the understanding that he would
stay , with ub, not as , a holdup game,
but to avoid unnecessary friction.
This ran along all right for some time.
Then presumably because he dlinu
consider he was getting his share of
the trade, he cut the price (on the
quiet) and offered to sell In two or
more gallon lots delivered to any part
of the town for the same , price that
lie Bold to the'rctaller who bought, say
This Is no hearsay, but an answer
to an Inquiry given over the phone to
a lady who phoned from our office.

Another call from Mr. Emigh re
sulted in an understanding as to the
price of butter.
This seemed to be all right until the
butter market advanced two cents,
when he advanced two cents here
and one cent out of town. (Another).
"' Mr. Emigh also BRked our custom of
handling out of town cream, or rather
cream received by express. . This Is
especially" true of fSummervllle cream
which comes part way by stage and
part by train. '
'We told him,, with the assurance
that he would use the snmo method,
that we pay the Sutnmervllle people
the same price ns we do those who
.haul, their croam hero, and decflict the
transportation charges. Sometime In
fall we were In Summervlllo and
found that Mr. Emigh had agreed to
pay the transportation to the rail
road. (Another.)
,We have . In our possession some
facts that will go these one better If
our competitor wishes to draw them
In spite of our competition we made
28,593 pounds more butter in 1911
thnn In 1910, before his arrival.
Furthermore, last July was the big
gest ice cream month -In. the hlstoyr
of this creamery. .
These are cold facts, not hot air.
