company, doing business under that
name or some other title yet to be se
lected, will open Its wholesale grocery

A city sales department will be con
ducted and Mr, Emahelsor will have
immediate charge of the entire dis

matches, for Instance, Is now here and
a carload of syrup In rolling.
Several other carloads have been
unloaded and by the loth of March It
is expected that Mr. Kniahoiser will
ho here to open up offices and get the
plant in running order by the 15th.

William Jennings .. Bryan .' glided
quietly through La Grande last night
and though the old ' guard was not
at the depot fo awaken the sleeping
statesman, still he was greeted this
morning en train by Turner Oliver,
Sam. Pace of Enterprise and various
other old timers. J, D. McKennon, who
was to join the party here, took au
earlier train. At Pendleton other dem
ocrats became a part of the crowd aud
the train carried a fine line of demo
cracy when it reached Portland this
noon:

Baker, Feb. 29. Baker democrats
were awake and so was W, ,J. Bryan
last evening when No. 5 rolled into
Baker. As a consequence a large audi
ence heard the Commoner in a very
brief and Impromptu speech:
"With the ex-president and the pres
ident fighting it out for the republi
can nomination, it surely looks like a
good year for democrats," said Bryan
to the party of faithful democrats who
gathered at the depot last evening.
It was hardly expected that he would
show himself, owing to the lateness
of the hour, but as the train stopped,
he was seen coming out of the vesti
bule, and a cheer went up. He shook
hands eagerly with those who gather
ed about him, and in response to a re
quest for his -ideas on the political slt-
i uatlon, replied briefly as noted above.
According to Mr. Bryan, he had in
tended retiring early, but learned on,
the train that a delegation would meet
him In this city, so decided not to go
to his berth until after the traia had
I passed Baker.
! He inquired after John Thompson,
now of Hereford, whom the Co;ii:r.on
er formerly knew In Nebraska, and
Bpoke of the late Colonel W. F. llutch-
, er, who was a personal friend and n
delegate .to the convention that nomi
nated. Bryan for president In 890. He
Inquired concerning the mining and
stock industries and asked about the
Irilatlon projects now under way In
this vicinity.
' . The time of his stop was all too
short, hut: those who were present were
amply rewarded by the warmth of tlu
greeting extended by the great leader
of the democratic party. The train
pulled In about 11:40 and was In the
station only a few moments. At tho
warning whistle, Bryan again boarded
hlB car and roled out of Baker with a
lusty cheer following him.

An Offense For Which a French Sol
dier Had to Die.
By deliberately Insulting a superior
otlicer at a court martial a French
soldier at. Lille Incurred the death pen
ally. The Incident is a deplorable one.
The fact, that the olllcers had to con
demn tho man Is likewise pnlnful, but
the military regulations were ' plain
aud left no alternative.
A dragoon in one of the regiments
at Lille was being tried before a court
martial. Another dragoon of the same
regiment, who was undergoing arrest
for some other fault, was summoned
as a witness. When this dragoon en
tered the room of the court martini he
was asked by the presiding colonel to
take off his cap. The man. took this in
bad part and Hung his cap at the colo
nel, following It' up with a storm of
abusive language. v
When he had finished, the colouel,
out of sheer good nature, asked him to
rellect and express regret for his ac
tlou, which he was willing to look
upon as a momentary outburst of tem
per. The dragoon merely repeated his
insults. The court martial immediate
ly deliberated and at the end of n
quarter of an hour gave judgment
condemning the dragoon to death.
