prisoners the benefit of such an enter
tainment, and great appreciation was
shown the club. . Every number ren
dered was encored two and even three
times, and. the boys, inspired by the
applause, sang especially well. The
Mandolin club proved exceptionally
popluar and were forced to play seven
numbers before they were allowed to
.. Raymond Coursen,, the . accompan
ist of the club, iplayed a piano solo,
which was encored twice. The piano
number was received well by the men
who applauded every appearance of
any of the musicians without partial

Under the present system, the pris
oners are treated very leniently, and
some sort of program Is arranged to!1
them every Tuesday. The lenient sys
tem adopted by Gov. Oswald West has
.proven very satisfactory In handling
the men, and Oregon leads 'the United
States In the prison system.V
After going through , the prison the
Glee club Inspected the state lunatic
asylum, . They were escorted through
all of the wards, and had a chance to
see all of the workings of the Institu

Sanford Dodge, he who has won re
nown throughout the country lor his
splendid portrayal of masterpieces In
the dramatic world, Is to be seen to
night at the Steward. He comes with
his company to produce ."The . Right
of Way" and theatre goers know what
"The Right of Way" is without ex
planatory remarks from the Observer.
The show itself is a masterpiece in
literature and Mr. Dodge is said to be
fully capable of producing it at its i

Tomorrow night Mr. Dodge will
