."Mrs. umaers nas oeen in very
poor health for some 24 or 25 year?,
and after being In. Harrlsburg the
greater part of the winter became sei1-
louuly ill. She was taken to the hos
pital on Monday, Jan. 22, and was op
erated upon Wednesday,. Jan. 24, for
removal of the appendix and ' also a
tumorous growth. The tumor con
tamed as near as can be estimated
three gallons or 24 pounds. ; The op
eration was exceedingly unusual, ow
ing to complications and while she
is getting along nicely, and high hopes
are entertained for her recovery it
was with a feeling that only a meager
chance remained when the step was
taken. -. . ' ' . ,
"In this Instance a spinal anasthesla
was used, the first attempt by , Vr.
Dale In his hospital, or by any sur-'
geou in the upper valley. The action
is peculiar in that she remained
awake, able to converse with those
about her with no sensation of pain.
She relished a cup of coffee before the
operation was complete. -
