(Special) Fat Elks, lean Elks, tall Elks, short Elks and aged Elks will compete for cash and glory at the Elks' grand lodge reunion in Portland next July. The committee In charge of the cel ebration will give $25 to each, the fattest, the leanest, the tallest, the shortest and the oldest Elk appearing In the mammoth parade, which will he a spectacular feature of . the week. Furthermore, the winner In each de partment will be given an honored po sition In the grand march preceding the society ball on the closing night ,of the convention, Portland business men will distri bute approximately $10,000 in prizes among viBltlng delegations of Elks. The following awards already have been authorized, distribution, to be based on the decision of the Judges: Band concert, $1,000, and $500. Bands In parade but not In concert, $500,$300 and $200. . . Lodge having ' greatest aggregate m'ileage( number of members in line multiplied by distance from home to Portland), $350, $250 and $150. To Drain Arknusns Swamp. .Memphis, Tenn., Jan. 25. A con tract for one of the most gigantic drainage projects ever undertaken in the south was let today by an engi neering firm of this city. The project Involves the' reclamation of sunken lands in northeastern Arkansas, sup posed to have been caused , by an earthquake about 100 years ago. About 300 square miles are included In the district. The contract calls for the construction of about 300 miles of ditches, 2S0 miles of which will be 40 to 50 feet wide and 15 feet deep. The main, ditch will be 55 miles long. Surplus water will be led into the St. Francis and Tyronza rivers. The reclamation will cost about $1,500,000.
