Threatening to destroy the homes of Mrs. Clive Cheshire and Mrs. John Stockman If compliance were not made with their demands for money, members of a black hand gang have succeeded In causing considerable un easiness among those acquainted with the attempts to extort money, Let ters were received 'by each of the two ladls last week but the police have kept the fact secret In the hopes of being able to apprehend the culprits. Mra. Cheshire reeclved the first letter In which she was ordered to leave $80 In gold at a water hydrant at the corner of Wilson and Garfield streets and a day or two later Mrs. Stockman received a similar letter, ev- j (dently written by the sams person and In which the same spot was desig nated for the depositing of $35. Both demands were emphasized by a threat to burn the residences of the recipi ents upon failure to respond. i The letters were turned over to the police and Chief Kearney -stationed an officer for several days and nights nar , tthe hydrant mentioned in the hopes of apprehending the black hand men when they came to ascer tain if their Intended victims had com plied with their demands. These ef forts, proved fruitless, however, for no oneappeared to get the bag of washers which had been left there. Probably School Boys. Chief Kearney is of the opinion that the letters were the work of school boys for the handwriting is of the vertical style now being taught in the public schools. Investigation, however, has failed to throw 1any light on the Identity of the culprits and the chief announced this morning that he would pay a substantial reward for Information leading to the arrest of the guilty parties. .;' ' , . ' ' , The Cheshire letter bore the signa ture B. H. S., presumably meaning Black Hand Society, but the Stockman letter was unsigned. OBITUARY. Summervllle, Ore., Jan. 11, .1912. Tolbert Thomas Glenn was born in Wapello, Iowa, on June 22nd, 1844, and died at hiB home , near Summervllle, Oregon, on January the 6th instant. In 1862 he crossed the plains with his father aud mother who settled in the Grande Ronde valley, where he has resided continuously since that time. On Sept. 20th, 1868 he was married to Miss Sarah Myers who survives him. The family of (Mr. Glenn Is now rep resented by Chas. E. Glenn of Lob tlne; William T. Arthur C. and Guy J. Glenn of Summervllle; Mrs. Hattle McWUUams of Newcastle, California; Mrs. Daisy Settlemelr of Portland, Mrs. Mlna Standley of Island City, and Miss Myra who resides In her parents' home at Summervllle. Of the family to which Mr. Glenn be longed there are. now living four sis ters ; Mrs. IM. A. Woodward of Milton; Mrs. A. M. Rlnehart of San Diego, Cal. J Mrs. C. C , Wells of Vale, Ore.; Mra. I. Holland of Burns; and three broth ers: Arthur,, Frank and Walter of Mal heur county, Oregon On Aug. 19th, 1895, J.t La Grande, the deceased with his wife, on confes sion of faith, united with the Presby terian church, through the kind and helpful office of the Rev. (Special) Sunday morning the 14th Ladd Canyon organized a chapter of the Epworth League. They take their place now as the 22nd on Die La Grande district and will be entitled to send delegates to the big Epworth League convention and Institute at Baker in June.
