McDanlel, who was the fir literary
adviser of Mark Twain, was found
dead in bed here today. In a maga
zine article published a short time be
fore t'.!i' death of A'r Twain' the au
thor said when he first began to write
humorous stories he always tried
them out ou McDanlel before he had
them published. If the stories got a
laugh from McDanlel, the humorist
wrote, lie , always felt assured they
would do.

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: No
tice Is hereby given that in pursuance
of a resolution adopted by the com
mon council of the city of La Grande,
Oregon, on the 27th day of December,
1911, creating a spociul Improvement
district, the property hereinafter de
scribed aa such district and the coun
cil proposes to assess the cost of the
sewer to the extent of the cost of an
eight Inch sewer, the amount of each
property owner's assessment being
stated in said resolution, the council
will ten days after the service of this
notice upon the owners of the proper
ty affected and bonollled by such im
provement, levy said assessment; that
the boundaries o said district to be
so improved are the exterior lines of
the property hereinafter described as
being benefitted, viz: -
Blocks 115, 111, 113, 112, 111 and 110
of Chaplin's addition; Blocks 3, 4, and
5 of Coggan's addition; and tracts H.
I, J, K, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, T and U
and block 12 of Coggan's second addi
tion all in the city of La Grande, Union
county, Oregon.
Notice Is .hereby further given that
the council will levy a special assess
ment on all the property affected and
benefitted by such Improvement for
the purpose of paying for such Im
provement. That the estimated cost
of such Improvement is the sum of
$6,271.77. That the council will on
the 17th day of January, 1912, meet at
the council chamber at the hour of
8 o'clock p. m. to consider said est!
mated cost and the levy of said as
sessment, when a hearing will be
granted to any person feeling aggrlev
ed by such assessment.
