Dig Plant ut North Powder to lie Ic ing Station Hereafter. Pacific Fruit Express company ice bouses in Eastern Oregon are being filled with the annual supihy. The North Powder plant, one of the very largest In the state and built last year and now operated by the Pacific Ex press Is the first to be filled. The ca pacity of that plant Is enormous and as a consequence overland fruit cars are to be iced there in the future. This will become an important adjunct to the business at North Powder, requir ing a considerable force of men dur ing the fruit shipping season which really is all summer long. Huntington and La Grande Ice houses owned by the same company are to be filled at once. The gateway house Is the more elaborate of the two for at La Grande COO tons is all that Is put up, although It Is a considerable quantity. Tills Is not to be confused with the Icing of Pullmans, however, as that will con tinue to be necessary both tit La Grande and Huntington, though on a more extensive basis at Huntington. The North Powder headquarters are tho outcomes of the plant owped by Andrew Lmi previously, hut purchased from him last year and remodelled and enlarged. The ice Is cut and put up at. Wife of 'Former Councilman of This Clly Passes Away at Portland. Word received yesterday evening from Portland Htntos that Mrs. Tom Fleming died at. the hospital there yes terday afternoon. She was taken to Portland by Mr. Fleming some time ago when her protracted Illness sug gested isuch action. Tho funeral will be held In La (Irandu probably Sunday although definite jiriangements have not been made, Mrs. Fleming had been a resident of this county since 1SSI1. at which lime she came with Mr. Fleming to llllgnrd. She was a nallve of Iowa, and as .Miss Cassle Modcalf was mar ried In 1SS2 to G. T. Fleming, at Owy hee, Idaho. In ISSi-l they moved to Wood River, where they remained till coming here. Her father and brother formerly lived here hut both are now dead. She lias a sister living at Owyhee, Idaho.
