Teachers ' can' do little without co-operation of the fathers .and mothers. Their responsibility Is mutual and their best service lies only through complete harmony of effort. ' In the earlest stageg ;. of society schools were not needed, , for each family was sufficient for its own need. "What teaching was dope ocourred in the privacy of the home. ' Then schools came Into being. So ciety was learning tbe advantages of Cooperative effort. The modern public school, complex and highly organized for efficient ser--vlce, Is the climax of this evolution-. xr process.- It is so'clety's latest con ception of effectiveness in education. But tbe school cannot succeed on- less the home continues to acknowl edge its close relationship and its complete responsibility In the under--taking. A school merely supplements tbe influence of the home; it is in no ,enae a substitute for it. The best organized and highest de veloped school becomes Impotent the Moment the homes, from which its pupils are recruited, withdraw their support. The flneBt teacher in the land is powerless to counteract the subtle power of an indifferent or ob structive parent. American fathers and mothers would Ao well to give this matter serious thought. Many, are neglecting to give their schools this kind of co-operation. It is not sufficient for men to pay their school taxes and furnish money for Bchool clothes and books; ,jor have the mothers performed their full duty when they keep clothes wended and faceg clean. In other words, they have not learned obedience, are strangers to real discipline. . But responsibility for this situation which has become most serious in the large cities of the land rests not upon the schools but upon the homes. A child who ig not compelled to bow to parental authority cannot tf ten be made to acknowledge the authority of a teacher. - ; At most the time spent In a school room' each day is brief as compared to that spent at home.. Almost of neces sity a parent's opportunity of influenc ing the child is greater and more con tinuous than that of the teacher. Here, then, is a way by which the homes of America may add materially to the efficiency of the American pub lic school. The chance to help the reform goes home to every household. Even the childless family cannot whol ly escape the responsibility.
