Early train ing counts for a great deal and in teaching the children, young men and young women the lesson of harmless. unalloyed entertainment and enjoy ment until ' they become thoroughly Imbued with the knowlodge of the proper kind of Amusement, the city is saving .Itself a great deal of future trouble und building up a moral tone that will have a wholesome effect upon the community In ' which they reside. . IT IS WELL. The Christmas festivities just closed cannot pass without a word of praise. No city ever did her part so nobly and so weld as has La Grande this year. Charity has been a marked fea ture. The churches did their parts, the Elks' lodge was a wholesale Christ mas joy shop this year, the theatres were liberal and the people as a whole could not have been more generous. Kivette on Christmas day showed his boyhood spirit by bitch ing the youngsters' sleds to his auto mobile and giving them some fine rides on the pavement. Nothing could hove pleased Mr. Kivette more than those merry children whom he was making happy. Chief Waldon will never be called a Santa Clous by the young couple from Wallowa county who wanted to get married in La Grande, but the mother of the bride objected. Even Tom and Jerry entered into the spirit of the holiday season, so It is said. . . The Grande Ronde turkey that es caped the axe Is safe now for a short period of time, at least. DKWEY IS SKVEXTY-FIVE. Manila liny Hero Is Greeted by Many . Friends. Washington, D. C, Dec. 26. Ad miral George Dewey, hero of the bat tle of Manila bay, and the ranking of ficer of the United States navy, en tered upon hla seventy-fifth year to day, having been born at Montpeller, Vt., December .26, 1837. There was no formal observance of the anniversary, though during the day there was an almostcontinuous stream of callers at) the Dewey residence. Admiral Dewey has almost com pletely recovered from the ' Illness which confined him to his home some months ago and is now in good health, considering . his years and arduous service. It has been a matter of re gret In society that the admiral and Mrs. Dewey have been seen so seldom In public during the past year or two. The hero of Manila bay is one of the most popular men in ipubllc life, and his few appearances In the official season, particularly at the receptions at the white house, only serve to ac centuate his popularity. The Dewey home Is situated at the corner of Sixteenth and K streets, next door to the house which was oc cupied by President Taft and family when he was secretary of war. The residence on Rhode Island avenue, which the country presented to the admiral as a jtoken of its affection, proved too small for him and he leas ed it to agreeable tenants. His pres ent home, although not pretentious, is more specious and splendidly adapted to the admiral's personal needs. One of the most interesting rooms in the house Is the large dining salon, the walls of 'Which aro.hung.with spears, swords shields and 'other JHltyino rel ics which we're presented' to" Admiral Dewey during his stay- in the Philip pines. - The so-called Blue Room, where the admiral and his wife received' their friends today, is another Interesting apartment in the Dewey home. The walls are covered with autographed photographs presented to the admiral by notables In many parts of the world. There are also hundreds of the original pen and InOt drawings which, after the battle of Manila bay, appeared in the daily newspapers and periodicols as cartoons of more or Hws humorous propensity. Washington Society Agog. - Washington, D. C, Dec. 26. A new mark for lavishness and splendor is expected to be set for society by the entertainment to be given by Mrs. W. F. Draper tomorrow night to Intro duce formally her daughter, Miss Marguerite Draper, who is a cIosh frlond of Miss Ifelen Taft. The func tion will take the form of a fancy dress cotillion. Several hundred guests have been invited, among them the socially eloct of Washington and others from Boston. New York. Phiin- delphln and other cities. It Is estimated that the cost of the funclon will exceed $25,000. The walls and celling of the large ball room will bo hidden from view entirely by the floral decorations. Live humming birds will fly around the miniature garden of daisies and rare exotics that is to be the central feature of the decora tlco scheme.
