Jts masterly repudia tion of the scurrilous suggestion that Mr, Taft might feel kindly toward the Oregon system, ought to be worth a near-by land office. With the usual bigotry adopted by many metropolitan newspapers the Journal attempts to sniff out the Ob server much as a grandfather sniffed out his candle at bedtime. But such an act will not work In this case. The schoolgirl snickering of the money mill at Portland will not , go, and at tempted ridicule will never silence principle and an issue which moans so much to the splendid state of Ore gon. The closing sentence of the Journal's editorial plainly tells . the story of the evident controlling sen timent in that newspaper. It seems to think everyone has his hand out for money or for office; that no at tempt to better conditions can exist without an uterlor motive. This may be true with the Journal, but the country press of Oregon chooses to view things on a higher plane. The time was In Oregon when the old republican machine was afflicted with the tame Itching of the palm - -w . 1 . .W V.M- permost in the Journal's mind now. The machine was turned down and the people in their endaavor tt betteT matters listened to the hypocritical utterances of "let the people ruto" made by the , Journal and its few bosses. ' . ... i ". V. Are conditions better? No, they . ar-3 merely more . secret Where .the old convention met and fought for place and power in the open, now a few of the Journal's ma chine mcot In secret and arrange the setting! of the yoke on ths public. If anyone raises an objection they attempt to smother him with cries of "he wants a land office Job," for Job and easy money and power seem to be all that, they inwardly know, yet their cry Is "let the people rule." Will their , hypocrisy last? ' Of course it will not. Oregon has gone through the acute stage. Peo ple are realizing what a Bourne, a Chamberlain, a Lafferty and a West means to a growing state. The people also realize what enormous taxes have h-sen levied on property by this "reform" element and how little has been really accomplsiied. Then will the state return to a machln-s and ring rue? No. never. But the time is fast approaching when it will not be certain defeat for a well balanced business man to run for office; when the state of Oregon will wipe out some of her insanis measures; when the rlghts.of people will be respected In stead of . being 1 Jeered at; when the snobby, plnheadd politician who nominates himself for office will be relegated to the discards as fast as he comes into public view ' ,, If it is a crime this year to be for PresMent Taft for re-election, as the Journal indicates, then the Observer Is guilty for we are flat footed for the president.. We are for him because he is making good; we are for him because he cannot be swayed to do unsafe things by such publications as the tJounial; because he has the cour age "to light 'for; the pWle'-wltVth'-A-they clap their' hands or not"; because ho Istthe only trust buster we have ever had m the presidential chair; be cause he accomplishes much anu W. The editor of this paper has no ac quaintance with Raph Williams, men tioned by the Journal, never saw him to our knowledge andave never had any kind of a communication from him. With Hen Selling at the head of the Taft committee in Oregon it does not look much like the old timers had the Taft matter very well" In hand.
