MENT. . to purchass. La Grande's streets are aow hard surfaced in trunk lines all over the city so that the truck could reach within two or three blocks of any fire on a hard road guaranteeing service the ent.re year tor any relia ble truck will make the ttree blocks in mud several loches deep. A paid department means cheaper Insurance. It means a safety to prop erty that otherwise cannot exist. Let us have the paid department using proper economy, but eee that it is a staple and substantial addition to the city's protection. The people, will never regret it and the expense will not be so great as some might think. kttThe local fire department has start ed on the right course when it decid ed to have placed on the city ballot a proposal or La Grande to have a paid ,'flre department and an auto truck. This puts the matter up to the people and relieves the city council of any responsibility except the purchase of the equipment If the movement car ries. Now, should the movement carry 1 By all means, yes. We do not nvean that an army of paid men should be employed but there should probably be three paid men on monthly salary -whose duty It is to be at the fire sta tion and in readiness to respond to any call. When Margaret Mayo wrote "Baby Mine" she must have had an inspira tion for the play is surely Inspired By whoever that goa may have been. It's a ckver play aftd funny. Funny hard ly ' describes It, "Its more, than that, when cares drop from shoulders like, rain from the clouds, when troubled minds clear up like the clouds them selves before the spring sunshine, when all anxiety and worry roil away before a gale of laughter much as th,en it's something more than hum erous. 'Baby Mine" is this kind of a show. It's laughable, more than be- ine laughable, it compels laughter. Tou simply must laugh, unless your laughing apparatus is entirely out. of gear; and several of this Kina were fixed last night, and although they started with a wheeze, before the eve ning was over the laughter came Just aa merrily as with the more used laushlns apparatus of the light heart ed. .
