FB3H Report Indicate Flames Will Mastered Soon. Be Pendleton, Aug. 31. Responding to force of 50 volunteers, undr coin mand of Frank Earn'aart, departed special coaches , attached to aboard train No. 10 at 1 olock this morning for the scene of the blaze in the Wen aha forest reserve. A telegram from Earnhart to Dan P. Smythe sent shortly before noon says that the volunteers have been work ing since their arrival and expect to have the blaze under complete control today. It Is burning in timber on ihe north side of the river about one mile above Gibbon station. Last night's alarm reported that a number of ranches along . the river were threatened by the blaze, which had broken beyond bounds and was no longer undr control by the ranch ers and a force of 40 men, who had been exerting strenuous efforts for two days to cheYk its spread. It was reported at the same Urns that Wen- aha Springs was threatened, but later reports today say that the resort Is In co danger. The message from Earnhart to Mr. Smythe says that For?st Ranger Sul lens will remain on the job for sever al days to guard against further out breaks. -. County Judge J. W.- Maloney, who returned yesterday from the scene ofi th3 fire brings the report that the five was under, control and the damage not ; heavy, asserted today that he believed ; the reports from that section had been greatly exaggerated. Other reports, however, indicate that thy fire is burning fiercely, and while the timber Is not of a particu larly valuable variety, the situation has caused ereat anxiety to the ranchers of that neighborhood.' . Trainmen also, report a fire near Kamela which has been burning for several days. , ' ; .. Last Report. Just before going to press the fol lowing dispatch was received by W. L. Thompson;-. v , "Change In the wind has increased fire danger. Boys having a time to control If, are about exhausted. Think should have at least ten frsh men with good-leader on No. i8 tonight.
