company ot Paris, France, This is

ence, having been established In the
year 1819. Its board of directors In
clude some of the best known French
financiers, such as Baron Edouard de

of the Bank of France. This company
has only recently invaded the United
States, having made the required de
posit and secured license to do. busi
ness in this country. Its general
agency for the Pacific coast has just
been let to Docley and company, Port

the coast. The insurance laws of the
United States prohibit foreign com

Much Routine Work Transacted at the
Council Meeting Last Night.
With the mayor, city recorder, eight
councilmen, city attorney,". city engi
neer and th full retinue of city officers-
present the council waded
through an immense amount of detail
ed work last night and though In ses
sion only about three hours, transact
ed a great deal of work. ' '
Fish Warden Warns City.
A communication from the master
fish warden was read to the council.
The city is requested to place screens
at the intake of every ditch or Irriga
tion stream taking Water from the
Grande Ronde river and in addition is
required to build a fish ladder at the

Washington Wants Macadam.
A lengthy petition from property
owners on East wasntngton avenue
was read, requesting that macadam be
placed from the 'end of the bitullthic
pavement to the city limits. The peti
