The Associated Press under a Wrsh ington dat line he ths following to say of the Lafferty matter: Representative Lafferty Is still ex posing himself to the ridicule of his associates in congress, as well as fur ther contributing to the mortification of Oregonlans in Washington, by his efforts to escape the consequences of bis indiscretion. The two Washing ton morning newspapers, cleverly tak en in by the Oregon representative, and induced to publish bis biased statement of the case In first Instance, have refused to consider Lafferty's later statements and have repaid the first imposition by caustically crit icizing the member from the econd Oregon' district and by exposing to their readers his conflicting state ments."" -:-r"-" "VTn:t'-t'!:H But Lafferty is still privately cir culating his 'explanations' to those who will listen, seemingly to have a story to fit the peculiar disposition of ,ach listener ,r '' . While Lafferty's ' writing a letter seeking to force his acquaintance on a high school girl. Miss Kubel, was ft eerio-js breach, especially so in Wash ington, where social , etiquette , Is so rigidly prescribed, and the lndlscre t'on was made greater by the fact that he is a member of congress, still, bis. ftrBt offense has almost been lost sight of in the 'censure brought down upon him for his subsequent actions In endeavoring to escape the consequen ces of his own folly.'" - -! ." In addition to being called a "poor liar" by Kubel, the girl's father, Laf ferty has made himself the more ridic ulous by a number of conflicting and utterly absurd' statements. Had he stuck .to the truth in the first Instance, and 'admitted the authorship of the Kubel missive, the matter might have jeen forgotten, and his constituency both here and In Oregon saved the mortification of continually apologiz ing for his conduct. ' 5 First attempting to escape the conT sequences of the Kubel letter when confronted by the angry father Laf ferty laid the blame on his secretary.1 Discovered in this falsehood, which he later admitted, he then raised cloud of dust about the real Issue and made a bid for public sympathy , on the grounds of ''political persecution." . Priva -As darning E. D. Baldwin, former secretary to, Congressman El lis, for having "peddled the story" all over Washington,". In his public state ment to Oregon newspapers Lafferty Intimated that Baldwin had attempted to "hold him up" as a consideration for suppressing the story. The ridic ulousness of thisj charge caused ih Washington r jiewspaper; "correspond-. ents to smile, arf-thetory had been known to them' for' two : months, had been repeated by Kubel to at least six Washington newspaper men and told by Miss Kubel to many of her girl friends. : '" ' ' '" .'. : Lafferty next tried the "political sympathy tack", by declaring the whole matter 'an attempt on the part Of certain Washington newspaper cor respondents to "ruin hla political ca reer" because he had openly declared himself to be an insurgent. He cited the watermark in the second Kubel Utter to show It had been prepared by his political enemies in Oregon written In OTegon on "paper exclusive ly for Portland firm. The mount Hood" watermark - declared by : Laf ferty to prove this charge turned out to be "Mount Holly" the brand of paper used in Kubel's office.1 " Lafferty's last frantic effort to dis tract attention from his previous mis statements "'was the dramatic' am houncement ' that he was being "con stantly shadowed' by two Southern Pacific detectives.' : 1 ' His' activity" in the' Oregon land grant 'case,' he: as serted, made blm the "only man who stood In the way of "the railroad com pany In keeping millions of acres of Oregon land from" the people' ' 'He must be silenced at any cos If with the lonetchampIoii of the' people embar rassed and dlscomfitted, the railroad could then work Its own sweet will. Had the correspondents accepted Lafferty's accusation and sent out the story, as he urged them to do. In the first' instance, the member from the second Oregon district would now un doubtedly be the defendant in a big damage suit. That Mr. Lafferty has at last come to a realization that all of the notor iety was brought upon himself by his own actions la evidenced by the fact that he has recently announced that ";he incident is closed" so far as he Is concerned. ,. ....'
